About the Role
The General Manager will be responsible for establishing, developing, and managing the Surat office as a key procurement and operational hub for Neve Jewels. This role requires strategic thinking, operational excellence, and a strong focus on supplier relationship management, data-driven decision-making, and profitability.
Responsibilities
Operations Management
- Establish and manage end-to-end operations of the Surat office
- Ensure office infrastructure, systems, and processes support efficient procurement and logistics
- Maintain compliance with company SOPs and regulatory requirements (GST, customs, BVC)
Procurement & Buying
- Drive timely procurement of diamonds (natural, lab-grown) and gemstones as per forecasted demand
- Implement data-driven buying strategies using historical analytics, trends, and demand planning
- Ensure 100% adherence to buying timelines and quality standards
- Build and nurture direct supplier relationships to eliminate middlemen and optimize costs
Logistics & Inventory Management
- Ensure shipments to distribution centers/customers leave on time and in perfect condition
- Maintain real-time inventory visibility and accuracy through DFE and stock management systems
- Implement robust security protocols to safeguard physical stock and minimize losses
- Manage inter-office stock transfers (Surat Mumbai) with full accountability
Team Leadership & Performance
- Build and lead a high-performing team (field officers, buyers, QC staff, coordinators)
- Set clear KPIs and performance metrics; track, review, and drive accountability
- Provide coaching and professional development to team members
- Foster a culture of quality, compliance, and continuous improvement
Financial & P&L Accountability
- Own P&L responsibility of the Surat office
- Monitor gross margins, operating expenses, and cost efficiency
- Drive volume growth while maintaining target margin ranges (8-12%)
- Implement cost controls without compromising quality or efficiency
Cross-Functional Coordination
- Maintain regular communication and alignment with Mumbai office on forecasts, inventory, and logistics
- Collaborate with Quality Control team to ensure certified and non-certified stone standards
- Work with Finance for accurate stock accounting and reconciliation
- Support Mumbai sales team with timely fulfillment and accurate information
Crisis Management & Problem-Solving
- Proactively identify and resolve operational challenges (stock discrepancies, supplier issues, logistics delays)
- Take ownership of firefighting situations and drive swift resolution
- Implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence
Supplier Relationship Management
- Identify, evaluate, and onboard new suppliers based on quality, cost, and reliability
- Negotiate favorable terms and volume commitments
- Conduct regular supplier reviews and site visits
- Document supplier performance and maintain a supplier scorecard
Qualifications
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in operations, procurement, or supply chain management
- Mandatory: Direct experience in the diamond/gemstone/jewelry industry
- Proven track record of building operations from ground up (preferred)
- Strong understanding of diamond/gemstone grading (GIA, IGI terminology)
- Familiarity with sourcing platforms (Rapnet, Nivoda, VDB) – a plus
- Demonstrated expertise in data-driven decision-making and analytics
- Excellent supplier negotiation and relationship management skills
- Strong financial acumen (P&L management, margin optimization)
- Leadership experience and ability to build and develop teams
- Logistics and inventory management experience
- Proficiency in Excel and basic ERP systems (or willingness to learn)
- Strong communication and coordination skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
Preferred Skills
- MBA or Bachelor's degree in Operations, Supply Chain, or Business
- Experience with inventory management systems or DFE/BVC processes
- Exposure to CVD testing or diamond certification workflows
- Prior experience in SEEPZ or EPZ operations
- Experience managing teams of 5+ people
- Familiarity with omni-channel retail/distribution models
