About SFM
Standard Furniture Mart (SFM) is a design-led custom woodworking shop based in Dehradun that crafts detailed furniture for residential and hospitality clients. We combine craftsmanship and contemporary design thinking to create pieces that are both timeless and unique.
Role Overview
We are looking for a Furniture Design Intern to support our design team across active live projects and to design a furniture collection. This internship is ideal for design students who want a hands-on exposure to custom furniture design, workshop processes, and real-world client-driven project development. You will be involved in meaningful design work from day one not just observing, but actively contributing.
As an intern, you will:
- Create mood boards, sketches, 2D CAD drawings, and 3D models
- Contribute to design development for residential and hospitality projects
- Explore materials, finishes, ergonomics, and construction techniques
- Work closely with our carpenters to understand manufacturability and joinery
- Assist in developing a furniture collection that aligns with SFM's design language
- Prepare client presentations and design documentation
- Assist with cataloguing, photography, and documentation of finished pieces
- Participate in day-to-day tasks that support design execution and workflow
What will you learn
This internship is designed to be immersive, practical, and growth-heavy. You will learn:
- How custom furniture is designed, prototyped, and executed
- Working understanding of joinery, construction, and workshop workflows
- How to collaborate with craftsmen and solve design-to-execution challenge
- How to balance design aesthetics with functionality and feasibility
- Professional communication with clients, vendors, and multidisciplinary teams
- Real-world project management: timelines, revisions, and quality control
What We're Looking For
- Final-year student in Product Design / Furniture Design / Interior Design / Industrial Design
- Strong interest in furniture design and material exploration
- Good command over AutoCAD (must), plus one 3D tool (SketchUp / Rhino / Fusion)
- Ability to sketch quickly and communicate visually
- Good sense of proportion, materials, and aesthetics
- Curiosity, initiative, and willingness to work hands-on with the workshop
- A portfolio that reflects solid design thinking and fundamentals
Skills That Will Help You Stand Out
- A genuine love for wood and handcrafted furniture
- Interest in Indian design language, heritage, or contemporary styling
- Photography, content creation, or catalogue design (bonus)
