Construction AI Startup is Looking for:
Construction is the world's second-largest industry. It runs on paper, WhatsApp, and institutional memory. A single large infrastructure project generates thousands of documents — architectural drawings, design revisions, bills of quantities, RFI logs, site photos, Primavera P6 schedules, daily voice notes in Hindi and English. Project managers spend most of their time chasing information that should take seconds to find.
Coso Build is a vertical AI platform for construction project management. Not a generic AI copilot. A purpose-built intelligence layer that ingests a project's full document corpus — drawings, specifications, financials, correspondence — and turns it into decision-ready outputs for construction teams.
THE ROLE
We're hiring a Full-Stack AI Engineer to build the product layer — the interfaces that construction project managers use every day, the APIs that power them, and the AI integrations that make them intelligent.
This is a 70% backend / 30% frontend role. You'll write Python APIs, integrate AI capabilities into real product workflows, and build React interfaces that construction teams depend on. You won't be specialising into one layer — you'll be shipping features end to end.
You'll report directly to our Singapore-based CTO and work alongside a small India engineering team. The pace is real and the work is live.
What You'll Build
- Backend APIs in Python (FastAPI or Django) powering the COSO platform — document ingestion endpoints, AI query services, project workflow APIs, and authentication layers
- AI integrations — connecting LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, HuggingFace, or Bedrock) into product features that construction teams interact with daily. Not prototypes. Live production features.
- React frontend interfaces — project dashboards, document viewers, AI chat interfaces, reporting UIs for construction teams. Clean, fast, and functional
- End-to-end feature ownership — from requirement discussion to deployed. You own both the API and the UI for the features you build
- Data models and schema design — structuring how COSO stores and retrieves construction project data, documents, and AI outputs
What We're Looking For
The core question we're asking for every candidate: have you actually shipped something that real people use We care about the quality and depth of what you've built more than the number of technologies on your CV.
Backend (70% of the role)
- Python backend framework in production — FastAPI, Django, DRF, or Flask. Named project with a live deployment, not a side experiment. One framework owned deeply is valued over superficial familiarity with five.
- REST API design — authentication (JWT or OAuth2), clean endpoint structure, versioning, and documentation. You've designed APIs that someone else consumed without a lengthy briefing.
- PostgreSQL or MySQL — schema design, relationship modelling, and query optimisation in a real application. You understand what queries your ORM is generating.
- LLM / AI API integration in a shipped product — OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, HuggingFace, Bedrock, or any other provider. An AI-powered feature that real users interact with. Integration depth matters more than provider choice.
- Cloud deployment — AWS, GCP, or Azure with Docker. You've deployed something to a cloud provider independently and can explain how it's running.
Frontend (30% of the role)
- React or a modern frontend framework — Next.js, React, Vue 3, Angular, or Svelte. A production UI with real users, shipped features, and component architecture you can walk through.
- State management and API integration — Redux, Zustand, React Query, SWR, or similar. You handle loading states, error states, and async data correctly. You've used more than useState and useEffect.
General
- 1–3 years of production experience — meaning features live in the world that real people depend on. Internship-only experience or tutorial-level projects are not sufficient.
- Evidence of individual ownership — a GitHub profile with visible contributions, a live project you can demo, or a specific feature you can point to and say: I built that.
- Comfort working across the stack in the same week — backend one day, frontend the next, without needing to fully context-switch.
NICE TO HAVE
You don't need these to apply. But if you have them, say so.
- Fine-tuning experience — LoRA, QLoRA, or any PEFT method on a custom dataset, with a training pipeline you own
- RAG pipeline depth beyond basic LLM API calls — chunking strategy, retrieval evaluation, hybrid search, embedding management
- Redis, Celery, or async task queues in a production system
- TypeScript on the frontend
- Anthropic SDK, function calling, or MCP experience
- Construction, infrastructure, or AECO domain familiarity
What This Role Is Not
We're being explicit because we'd rather you self-select accurately than both of us waste time.
- Not a research role — you're building product, not exploring what's possible
- Not a frontend-only or backend-only role — if you strongly prefer one and avoid the other, this is the wrong fit
- Not a role for someone who wants to explore AI — you should have already integrated an AI API into something a real user depends on
- Not a large-team role with defined swim lanes and quarterly planning cycles — at 7 people, you'll wear more than one hat, and that should energise rather than worry you
