About the Role
We are looking for a hands-on Full-Stack Software Engineer to support the development of a next-generation AI-powered examination script digitisation platform for a Singapore public-sector organisation.
This is a broad engineering role spanning web applications, backend services, Windows desktop applications, hardware integration, cloud infrastructure, and AI-enabled document processing. You will work on systems that interface directly with high-throughput document scanners and process large volumes of examination scripts during critical operational periods.
The successful candidate should have strong software engineering fundamentals and be comfortable working across system boundaries — from frontend and backend development to desktop applications, hardware interfaces, AI services, and cloud infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain full-stack applications, including frontend interfaces, backend APIs, database models, and background processing services.
- Build and maintain a Windows desktop application used by operators to control document scanners, validate captured images, manage scan batches, and communicate with cloud-based services.
- Integrate applications with scanner hardware and vendor SDKs, including TWAIN, ISIS, WIA, or equivalent device interfaces.
- Develop robust scan-capture workflows covering image validation, error handling, retry mechanisms, batch processing, and upload to cloud storage.
- Build and enhance browser-based tools for configuring and managing Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) templates and document processing workflows.
- Integrate AI/ML services, including LLM APIs, computer vision, OCR/ICR, zone detection, and AI-assisted document/template processing.
- Implement production-ready AI integrations covering rate limiting, retries, prompt/version management, output validation, and quality evaluation.
- Design and optimise high-throughput processing pipelines capable of handling significant workload spikes during examination periods.
- Implement and optimise background job queues, concurrency controls, asynchronous processing, object storage pipelines, and external service integrations.
- Troubleshoot issues across application, network, operating system, hardware, and cloud boundaries.
- Work closely with Product Managers, operations teams, and other stakeholders to translate operational scanning workflows into reliable software solutions.
- Maintain strong engineering practices including automated testing, typed code, code reviews, CI/CD, clean API boundaries, and technical documentation.
- Design solutions with appropriate consideration for scalability, reliability, maintainability, security, and operational resilience.
Requirements
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
- Strong hands-on experience in full-stack software development, covering modern web frontend development, backend APIs, and relational databases.
- Strong understanding of core software engineering concepts including system design, concurrency, asynchronous programming, API design, data modelling, and distributed system behaviour.
- Experience developing desktop applications using native frameworks, Electron, .NET/C#, or equivalent technologies.
- Understanding of the operational considerations involved in deploying and maintaining applications on managed Windows environments.
- Experience or strong interest in hardware/device integration, such as vendor SDKs, scanner interfaces, USB/serial devices, peripheral APIs, or driver-level integrations.
- Experience integrating AI/ML services into production applications, including LLM APIs, OCR, computer vision, or related technologies.
- Understanding of production AI considerations such as rate limits, retries, output validation, prompt/version management, and model quality evaluation.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure and services, including containers, object storage, managed services, background processing, and job queues.
- Strong understanding of automated testing, version control, code review, CI/CD, and production software engineering practices.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, particularly when diagnosing issues across multiple systems or integration boundaries.
- Ability to evaluate technical trade-offs and take ownership of engineering and architectural decisions.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with TypeScript, Next.js, C# and .NET.
- Experience developing and deploying Windows desktop applications.
- Experience integrating TWAIN, ISIS, WIA, scanner SDKs, hardware devices, or vendor APIs.
- Experience with OCR/ICR, Optical Mark Recognition (OMR), computer vision, or document-processing systems.
- Experience building image-processing pipelines, including ingestion, validation, transformation, and storage at scale.
- Experience designing systems involving queues, asynchronous processing, concurrency, and high-throughput workloads.
- Experience with cloud object storage such as Amazon S3 or equivalent services.
- Experience working with LLMs, AI-assisted document processing, or production AI applications.
- Prior experience with the Singapore Government Tech Stack or public-sector technology projects would be advantageous.
- Experience supporting high-availability or operationally critical systems where reliability and downtime have significant business impact.
