Overview:
This role is with one of our clients (and not with Avistrat) which is an established drone start-up. We are looking for someone with a deep interest in the physics of flight and a strong desire to be part of a dynamic team.
Position: Flight Physics Engineer (UAV)
Responsibilities:
- Performing conceptual design and/or preliminary design for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) based on requirements from different stakeholders.
- Collaborate and co-develop novel, certifiable systems to solve the toughest problems in electric aviation.
- Utilization of our in-house aircraft design tools to come up with candidate designs.
- Conduct hand calculations in aircraft performance estimates (constraint analysis, power level required etc.).
- Work with the manufacturing team to realise certain design constraints.
- Devise testing methodologies to validate and verify your computations/calculations.
- Utilization of advanced mathematical AI/ML algorithms to perform aircraft-level, system-level and/or component-level optimization.
Basic Qualifications and Experience Required:
- Bachelors (or) Masters (or) PhD with relevant experience in Aerospace related domain.
- Minimum years of experience of 4 to 5 years
- Experience and strong knowledge of Multi-Disciplinary Optimization (MDO)
- Expertise in aerodynamic analysis tools (e.g., XFLR5, Open VSP, XFOIL).
- Familiarity with electric and fuel-based propulsion systems.
- Expertise in flight dynamics and control calculations and simulations.
- Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams to ambitious deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with attention to detail.
- A highly motivated and focused individual with excellent communication skills.
- Someone who undertakes a structured and analytical approach to a problem.
- Possess excellent technical writing and documentation skills for design reviews and company records.
Essential Skills:
- Experience in aircraft sizing methods size, weight and performance estimates.
- Experience in Multi-Disciplinary Optimization (MDO) methodologies for developing aircraft concepts based on requirements provided.
- Strong basics in Python or C/C++ or similar coding language to develop aircraft sizing codes for aircraft sizing, performance and optimization calculations.
- Expertise in flight dynamics and control calculations and simulations (Using tools such as MATLAB, Xplane etc.).
- Strong base in one or more of the following fields: Aerodynamics, aircraft structures, flight mechanics, propulsion.
- Understanding of fixed wing and rotary wing design.
Desired Skills:
- Knowledge of Multi-Disciplinary Optimization (MDO) algorithms and ability to solve optimization problems in any capacity using gradient and/or non-gradient based optimization methods.
- Exposure to working with HAPS
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with attention to detail.
- Basic understanding of propeller and motor selection.
- Demonstrated experience in development of prototype UAVs.
- Hands on experience with usage of aircraft design codes.
- Understanding of aircraft performance deviation from design to actual flight.
