Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

1. Team Leadership & Management

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of mechanical engineers and designers to ensure high performance and technical excellence.
  • Allocate resources and manage project workloads for mechanical design engineers, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality engineering solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance and support in resolving complex design challenges.
  • Conduct performance evaluations, identify development needs, and create opportunities for professional growth within the team.
  • Organize and lead team meetings to ensure communication and alignment on project goals and timelines.

2. Project Oversight & Execution

  • Oversee the mechanical design engineering aspect of multiple projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget.
  • Define project scopes, schedules, and resources required for mechanical design activities, ensuring alignment with overall project objectives.
  • Manage design reviews, ensuring that design solutions meet both client requirements and industry standards.
  • Monitor project progress, identify potential risks, and develop mitigation strategies to keep the projects on track.

3. Design Quality & Compliance

  • Ensure that all mechanical designs comply with relevant engineering codes, standards (ASME, ANSI, ISO, etc.), and client specifications.
  • Implement quality control procedures to ensure the mechanical design is accurate, consistent, and safe.
  • Review and approve engineering calculations, design drawings, and technical documents to ensure the highest standards of quality.
  • Maintain and enforce design documentation standards to ensure completeness and accuracy of design records.

4. Client & Stakeholder Communication

  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for clients, ensuring that their requirements are understood and incorporated into the design process.
  • Collaborate with project managers, other engineering disciplines, and clients to ensure alignment of project goals and deliverables.
  • Support the sales and business development teams in the preparation of proposals, presentations, and client meetings.
  • Provide technical expertise and support during client meetings, including design reviews, workshops, and project status updates.

5. Resource Planning & Budgeting

  • Ensure effective resource allocation across multiple projects and departments.
  • Develop, track, and report on project budgets and timelines, managing resources efficiently to meet project goals.
  • Control costs by identifying potential inefficiencies and recommending improvements to design processes.

6. Process Improvement & Innovation

  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement within the engineering team, including workflow optimization, automation, and new technologies.
  • Foster a culture of innovation by staying up to date with the latest developments in mechanical design and engineering technology.
  • Promote the adoption of best practices in mechanical design engineering to increase productivity and reduce costs.

7. Risk Management & Issue Resolution

  • Proactively identify and manage risks related to design, safety, and project execution.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot issues that arise during the design and construction phases.
  • Implement corrective actions and solutions to address challenges and ensure project success.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. A Master's degree is a plus.
  • Experience: 10+ years of experience in mechanical design engineering, with at least 4-5 years in a leadership role managing engineering teams.
  • Certifications: Professional Engineer (PE) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status is preferred. PMP or similar project management certification is a plus.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, including HVAC, piping, pressure systems, rotating equipment, and mechanical systems design.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop engineering teams, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
  • Project Management: Strong project management skills, with experience overseeing the execution of large-scale engineering projects.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to troubleshoot design and project issues, finding practical and cost-effective solutions.
  • Software Proficiency: Experience with mechanical design software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit, or similar tools. Familiarity with project management tools such as MS Project or Primavera is a plus.
