About the Role

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will lead a team and create technology products that help people have the best healthcare experience they have ever had.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach and support a team of Software Engineers in the development and maintenance of technology products
  • Working with Product Management, develop the long-term strategy for your team and translate it into achievable goals
  • Understanding how all architectural elements of the software ecosystem work together and develop engineering and testing approaches that fit the overall strategy
  • Push for decisions to be made effectively and remove blockers that impede team progress. Drive team goals forward by organising the team's work and setting appropriate milestones.
  • Deliver regular updates within the team and to leadership
  • Build an excellent relationship with relevant colleagues (engineering, product, design, data, etc) to deliver collaboratively and align on key strategic decisions.
  • Proactively escalate issues in a timely manner with delivery to appropriate colleagues
  • Foster a culture of continuous engineering improvement through mentoring, feedback, and metrics
  • Empower engineers to achieve a high bar of engineering excellence in their work, creating space for testing, automation, observability, documentation and other important concerns.
  • Partner with senior engineers in your area to drive technical initiatives that raise the bar for our engineering practices.
  • Keep the team directionally aligned with their goals.
  • Create effective systems for managing work and maintain a healthy shipping cadence by balancing short and long term priorities, and appropriately unblocking others when needed.
  • Encourage innovative ideas to the table every day, in order to find better ways of accomplishing your objectives.
  • Collaborate with the wider engineering organisation to contribute to company-wide best delivery, managerial and technical practices and standards.

Qualifications

  • Degree/Masters in Computer Science or equivalent of education/work experience
  • 7+ years as a software engineer (profession/academic) across a range of technologies (ideally include Java, Javascript), including building distributed systems
  • 2+ years of experience as a software engineering manager building, leading and developing exceptional teams in the development of complex systems

Required Skills

  • Must have extensive experience in full‑stack Java development, with proven ability to influence architecture decisions, guide engineering teams, and drive high‑quality delivery
  • Experience designing software architectures for scalability, reliability and performance
  • Experience building a product from concept to prototype and implementation
  • Experience developing cloud software services
  • Computer Science fundamentals experience in data structures, algorithm design, problem solving, and complexity analysis
  • Proven knowledge and experience of agile delivery processes
  • Experience in recruiting, managing and coaching Software Engineers to improve their skills and make them more effective.
  • Experience in communicating with users, teams, and senior management to understand outcomes, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Able to work in a complex organisation, maintaining resilience during transformation
  • A curious and highly flexible thinker who enjoys a challenge

  • Experience in treating customers fairly by making the fair treatment of customers central to all organisational changes, procedural changes and policy decisions that you make, approve or oversee.
  • Always demonstrating fair customer treatment to other employees – leading by example.

  • Being able to explain the impact that your role and actions have on the fair treatment of customers.

  • Always seeking to be competent to do your job e.g. by completing all compulsory regulatory training on time to ensure that you have all the necessary knowledge and skills.
  • Always seeking to help those people who work for you to be competent to do their jobs e.g. by ensuring that they complete all compulsory regulatory training on time.
