Role Summary
Join an innovative team at athenahealth as an Engineering Manager within the Interoperability Networks zone, where you will lead the charge in transforming how providers and payers seamlessly exchange data and insights to support optimal care decisions while streamlining burdensome administrative processes. This position is in Chennai, India. You will report directly to the Director of Engineering, Interoperability Networks, contributing to a dynamic and collaborative environment.
Team Summary
This manager position is within the Interoperability Networks zone, part of the broader athenahealth engineering organization. The zone is responsible for building a suite of solutions that deliver relevant, actionable data from across the broader healthcare ecosystem consisting of Payers, Providers, Patients, and Vendors at scale.
We support a broad range of capabilities such as Solutions that connect and surface data at the point of care, enabling easy sharing of vital information to support care coordination, Real-time and on-demand exchange of clinical data and authorizations between health plans and providers
Teams within this zone work at the intersection of healthcare interoperability standards (HL7 FHIR, CDS Hooks, Da Vinci Implementation Guides) and modern software engineering, with a strong focus on Innovation, automation, scalability, and delivering measurable clinical and operational value to the clients.
Essential Job Responsibilities
. Lead and manage high-performing engineering teams within the Interoperability Networks zone, as a core R&D partner by co-owning product outcomes with Product and Design from problem definition through delivery.
. Drive early technical review of scope, feasibility, sequencing, dependencies and risk to arrive at decisions and plans before commitments are finalized.
. Develop and oversee project plans to ensure timely delivery of interoperability solutions aligned with product commitments and regulatory requirements.
. Manage cross-team dependencies, integration points, and risks across geographies to support reliable delivery of complex initiatives.
. Facilitate collaboration among internal and external stakeholders to align on project objectives and deliverables.
. Drive engineering excellence across the team by championing practices aligned with the Engineering & Service Excellence Maturity Model - including code quality, security, service reliability, automation, and data-driven decision-making.
. Apply AI-enabled tools and approaches to improve engineering planning, decision support, and delivery workflows, and help evaluate where AI can responsibly improve speed, quality, and insight in the organization
. Analyse team performance metrics and identify areas for improvement to optimize delivery workflows and engineering quality.
. Coach and mentor team members to enhance their professional growth, technical skills, and ownership mindset there by building a sustainable high performing AI-enabled team.

. Participate in architectural discussions to help shape the future of interoperability capabilities within the zone.
. Promote AI-powered development practices within the team, including AI-assisted testing, code review, and documentation to accelerate delivery.
. Own and improve incident management practices, including root cause analysis, countermeasures, and proactive alerting to ensure high service availability and resilience.
. Drive reduction of technical debt through disciplined identification, architecture governance, and refactoring strategies.
. Advance delivery efficiency through improved release frequency, change success rates, deployment automation, and feature flagging practices.
. Engage in recruiting and developing talent to build and sustain a high-performing team.
. Conduct regular team meetings, one-on-ones to coach and ensure alignment on goals and surface challenges early.
. Interface with stakeholders and standards bodies to stay current on interoperability mandates and align team roadmaps accordingly.
. Contribute to knowledge sharing, cross-team collaboration, and a culture of innovation within the Interoperability Networks zone.
. Facilitate organizational change initiatives that improve operating effectiveness.
Expected Education & Experience
. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
. 10+ years of experience in software engineering and technology leadership, including 2+ years in leadership roles.
. Proven experience leading teams and delivering complex products at scale.
. Demonstrated success in building and developing high-performing engineering teams with a focus on team building, coaching, resource planning and collaboration.
. Strong background in any programming language preferably Java and experience with modern software development methodologies.
. Familiarity with AI tools, AI driven development methodologies and agile principles and practices.
. Familiarity with FHIR-based interoperability standards experience with healthcare payer-provider data exchange workflows is a strong plus.
. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
. Healthcare technology experience is a plus, but not required.
