Purpose of Role

The Engineering Lead (EL) is the single point of engineering accountability for a product. They are paired with a Product Owner as co-equal leaders in the yin-yang model: the Product Owner defines what to build the EL owns how to build it and is accountable for all engineering delivery.

The EL line-manages the cross-functional product team day-to-day, assembling the right skills from functional pools (AI Engineering, Data Engineering, Software Engineering, QA, SRE, etc.).

Key Accountabilities

1. End-to-End Engineering Delivery

  • Own the full engineering delivery lifecycle for assigned product(s): architecture, development, testing, deployment, and operations
  • Support SM with sprint planning, execution, and retrospectives for the product team
  • Ensure on-time, in-scope, production-grade delivery with measurable SDO metrics
  • Maintain delivery forecasts and escalate risks proactively to the diamond (PO, TA, PM)
  • Track and report: deployment frequency, lead time for changes, MTTR, change failure rate
  • Own observability, cost-aware design, and FinOps for the product

2. Technical Excellence & Architecture Alignment

  • Ensure all engineering work aligns with enterprise architecture standards and the convergent platform strategy
  • Partner with Technical Authorities to maintain design quality - no significant build without TA review
  • Track and proactively reduce technical debt within the product
  • Drive adoption of shared platform components, reusable services, and solution blueprints
  • Own the product's technology stack decisions within architectural guardrails

3. Cross-Functional Team Leadership

  • Manage the cross-functional product team: engineers from multiple functions working together
  • Compose the team from functional skill pools in collaboration with Heads of Function
  • Support SM to run regular retrospectives with measurable improvement actions
  • Foster psychological safety - engineers should feel safe to experiment, fail fast, and challenge
  • Support SM and PO on driving agile practices consistently: sprint planning, stand-ups, demos with stakeholders, retrospectives
  • Support onboarding, mentoring, and day-to-day skill development within the team

4. Engineering Recruitment & Team Composition

  • Engineering recruitment authority sits with the EL and Head of Function, NOT with Product
  • Identify skills gaps within the product team and work with the Head of Function to fill them
  • Participate in hiring panels and technical interviews for the product team
  • All contractor and supplier engagements must go through engineering governance - no unilateral offers

5. Product-Engineering Alignment (Yin & Yang)

  • Operate as the PO's co-equal engineering partner in the product diamond
  • Attend and co-lead product roadmap planning sessions
  • Provide engineering input on feasibility, effort estimation, and trade-offs
  • Communicate engineering progress, risks, and dependencies transparently to all stakeholders
  • Drive demos and showcases with business stakeholders to build trust and visibility
  • Neither the PO nor the EL reports to the other - they are co-equal partners with distinct accountabilities

6. Cross-Site Collaboration & Engineering Culture

  • Lead effectively across Dublin, Bengaluru, Krakow, and Singapore as required by product team composition
  • Ensure equitable involvement of all sites in design decisions, code reviews, and demos
  • Contribute to Core Engineering knowledge sharing: chapters, guilds, communities of practice
  • Maintain in-person touchpoints as per site guidelines

Skills & Experience Required

Essential

  • 12+ years in software/data/AI engineering, with 3+ years leading cross-functional teams
  • Strong technical depth in at least one discipline (T-shaped) with breadth across others
  • Proven delivery track record: shipping production-grade products on time and at quality
  • Experience with agile delivery, CI/CD, DevSecOps, and cloud-native architectures
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Collaborative leadership style - coaching over directing, enabling over controlling
  • Experience working across multiple geographies and time zones

Desirable

  • Experience in a dual-leadership or matrix model (PO + EL pairing)
  • Familiarity with Aon's technology stack (Azure, Databricks, OpenAI, LLMs, RAG)
  • Background in financial services, insurance, or data analytics domains
  • Pi-shaped profile: deep expertise in two disciplines (e.g., AI + Platform, Data + Backend)
