Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the quality and chemical composition of all refractory items used in operations.
  • Guide and ensure correct lining procedures and drawing patterns are followed by masons, as per specifications received from the client/party.
  • Work to increase refractory life by conducting trials with new materials and optimizing usage.
  • Identify poor-performing refractory materials and implement corrective action plans to enhance performance and reduce cost.
  • Calculate and monitor refractory usage costing in the Steel Melting Shop (SMS).
  • Coordinate with the purchase team to ensure material availability on the shop floor to avoid production delays.
  • Maintain 5S and housekeeping standards in refractory and ladle areas; lead in TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) activities.
  • Regularly inspect EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) lining conditions, and guide the maintenance team for necessary repairs.
  • Plan manpower allocation for shifts, conduct training sessions to improve skills and ensure production efficiency.
  • Ensure timely availability of ladles and arc furnaces for smooth and uninterrupted production.
  • Serve as a backup to Ladle Engineer when required.
  • Execute refractory applications such as gunning, shotcreting, PCPF blocks, and bricks.
  • Conduct inspection of castable lining, ceramic fibre lining, insulation brick lining, and other refractory-related works.
  • Perform thermal scanning and imaging for condition monitoring and preventive maintenance.
  • Coordinate refractory testing, review test reports, and ensure compliance with standards.
  • Review and verify refractory drawings to ensure technical accuracy.
  • Liaise with clients and consultants for project execution and technical clarifications.
  • Supervise on-ground refractory teams and ensure alignment with project timelines.
  • Prepare and submit progress reports for management review.
  • Ensure compliance with Indian and International codes and standards relevant to refractory and insulation works.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma/Degree in Ceramic Engineering (Preferred).
  • Candidates from other engineering disciplines may be considered if they possess significant refractory operations experience in steel plants.

Experience:

  • 69 years of relevant experience in refractory execution jobs in Operations / Steel Melting Shop.
  • Sound knowledge of refractory selection and application in iron zone of large and integrated steel plants is essential.
