Job Description

Embedded Engineer

  • Location: Chennai, India (Onsite)
  • Job Type: Full-Time
  • Experience Required: 1 Year+

Who Are We

ThinkMetal is a VC-backed startup focused on advanced materials innovation for manufacturing,

with a strong emphasis on metal and alloy systems for additive manufacturing. We operate at

the intersection of materials science, hardware, and process engineering, building integrated

solutions that translate material capabilities into scalable, production-ready systems.

Our work spans metal and alloy development, feedstock engineering, and manufacturing setup

design, enabling high performance, reliable, and repeatable industrial processes. We focus on

taking materials from lab scale understanding to real world manufacturing deployment,

particularly for metal based applications.

As part of the team, you will work in a highly hands-on environment with direct exposure to

end-to-end product and process development, from concept and experimentation to production

implementation.

Role Overview

Responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining embedded systems for additive

manufacturing platforms and industrial electronic products. The role involves firmware

development, MCU-based system design, PCB-level understanding, hardware debugging, and

basic IoT integration across R&D and production environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain production-grade embedded firmware in C/C++ for MCU-based systems.
  • Design and validate communication subsystems using SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, and USB for reliable system integration.
  • Perform board bring-up, hardware validation, and system-level debugging.
  • Review schematics and support PCB layout validation.
  • Integrate sensors, motor drivers, heaters, thermistors, and other peripherals.
  • Implement control algorithms (PID, motion control, thermal control systems).
  • Support IoT integration including device communication, remote monitoring, and basic OTA concepts.
  • Participate in the full product development lifecycle: concept, design, prototyping, validation, production, and post-deployment support.
  • Conduct hardware and firmware debugging using electronic testing and diagnostic tools.
  • Maintain firmware documentation, version control, and release records.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams for system integration and product development.
  • Support production testing, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Preferred Skills

  • Familiarity with USB-C and USB Power Delivery.
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols.
  • Exposure to 3D printer or CNC firmware ecosystems.
  • Experience with motion systems (stepper/servo motor control, drivers, kinematics).
  • Experience in thermal control systems (heaters, thermistors, PID control, safety mechanisms).
  • Hands-on experience with 3D printer electronics, control boards, or machine integration.

Qualifications

  • B.E / B.Tech in Electronics, Electrical, Embedded Systems, or a related field.
  • Strong fundamentals in microcontroller architecture and embedded C/C++.
  • Hands-on experience with MCU-based hardware debugging.
  • Ability to read and understand schematics and PCB layouts.

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to work on the complete product lifecycle from concept and design to production and field deployment.
  • End-to-end exposure to hardware and firmware development.
  • Collaboration with cross-functional teams across R&D, production, and product development.
  • Fast-paced, innovation-driven work environment.
  • Market-standard compensation with performance-based incentives.
  • Long-term technical growth opportunities.
