This Position reports to:

Local Division Manager Energy Industries

The Global Segment Competency Cluster Lead for E-Fuels one of ABB'is a strategic new leadership role. This greenfield role carries a twin mandate: to build world-class sector competency within PAEN and to drive commercial success in this new energy vertical. Operating without geographic constraint, the incumbent will architect ABB's global market presence across the full E-fuels value chain from green hydrogen production and electrolysis to Power conversion, synthetic aviation fuel, methanol, and ammonia. The role demands equal parts of market strategist, business builder, and people developer.

This role is contributing to Automation Business, based in Bangalore, India

You will be mainly accountable for:

  • Strategic Leadership & Global Market Development
  • Define and deploy the global E-fuels cluster strategic plan: market segmentation and commercial targets; and investment priorities aligned with PAEN Division strategy.
  • Serve as ABB's internal and external anchor on E-fuels technology trends, regulatory frameworks competitive dynamics, and customer economics, translating intelligence into portfolio and channel requirements.
  • Establish ABB's global brand and thought leadership in E-fuels: conference keynotes, white papers.
  • Greenfield Business Development & Commercial Execution
  • Build the global commercial opportunity pipeline: set volume, price, and mix targets; manage pipeline rigour; coach Capture Teams on complex multi-year pursuits across EPC, MAC/MEC, and digital transformation project types.
  • Negotiate and close strategic frame agreements and multi-site master service contracts with C-suite stakeholders at project developers, energy majors, green hydrogen producers, e-fuel technology licensors, and engineering contractors.
  • Construct the partner ecosystem essential for scale: technology and system integrators active in the E-fuels space.
  • Competency Cluster Building & Organizational Development
  • Design and build the global cluster operating model: define roles across sales, solution consulting, project delivery, and service;
  • Develop and implement strategies to build E-fuels expertise within PAEN: coordinate training programmes, workshops, and technical professional development pathways for cluster members and the broader organisation.
  • Promote systematic knowledge-sharing and cross-functional collaboration; build the institutional memory and documentation that makes ABB's E-fuels capability scalable and transferable.
  • Develop KPIs, performance dashboards, and management cadence that provide transparency to Division and Hub leadership.
  • Product Strategy & Innovation Alignment
  • Partner closely with Product Management and R&D to translate E-fuels market signals and customer requirements into a prioritised product and solution roadmap — ensuring ABB's portfolio evolves ahead of market demand.
  • Drive product strategy based on market need and evaluate and recommend strategic technology partnerships, JVs, or acquisition targets that would accelerate ABB's E-fuels capability building.
  • Safety, Compliance & Risk Management
  • Embed functional safety hydrogen safety standards process safety, and HSE requirements into all E-fuels cluster solutions and delivery models from the outset.
  • Proactively identify and mitigate risks across regulatory, technology, cybersecurity, supply-chain, and financial dimensions; maintain full compliance with ABB's Code of Conduct, integrity standards, and sustainability commitments.
  • Global Stakeholder & Matrix Leadership
  • Act as the single global face of ABB for E-fuels while orchestrating across Hubs leadership.
  • Lead through influence across ABB's matrix structure: align priorities, secure resources, and build coalitions without relying on direct authority.
  • Represent ABB in industry alliances, regulatory consultations, and government-level dialogues that shape the emerging E-fuels policy and standards environment.
  • Inspire, mentor, and develop the next generation of E-fuels leaders within PAEN.

Qualifications For The Role


  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, Energy Systems, Industrial Economics, or Business (MBA preferred).
  • 15+ years in energy, industrial automation, or process industries with at least 5 years in segment leadership, business development, or greenfield market entry at a global scale.
  • Proven track record of building a business or market segment from scratch within a large global enterprise — with demonstrable commercial results.
  • Direct experience in hydrogen, Power-to-X, E-fuels, or adjacent clean energy sectors (offshore wind, carbon capture, ammonia, biofuels) strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to close large, strategic, multi-year automation or EPC contracts with major energy or industrial customers.
  • Deep understanding of the E-fuels value chain: technology fundamentals, project economics, regulatory frameworks, and key players globally.
  • Strong leadership and cross-cultural team-building capabilities; experience managing globally dispersed, cross-functional teams.
  • Outstanding communication, stakeholder management, and executive-level presentation skills in English; additional languages an advantage.
