About Astrobase Space Technologies

Astrobase is a pioneering spacetech startup founded by prominent Senior ISRO scientists and IIT Bombay alumni with over 20 years of experience in designing, manufacturing, testing and flying advanced Cryogenic Launch Vehicles. Driven by a vision to make India a Space tech powerhouse, we are developing innovative launch vehicles that will transform space exploration. At Astrobase, you'll be part of a team creating history in the Indian space industry. Our goal is to become the first private space company from India to land on the moon economically.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop welding fixtures, assembly fixtures, jigs, and handling tools for cryogenic tanks and sub-assemblies.
  • Support tank plate rolling, dome forming, shell welding, and final vertical/horizontal assembly operations.
  • Develop fixtures for circumferential and longitudinal welding, ensuring distortion control and dimensional accuracy.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing, welding, quality, and structural teams during design and execution.
  • Perform fixture feasibility studies considering crane height, lifting hooks, tilting mechanisms, and roller beds.
  • Design job lifting, tilting, and rotation mechanisms for heavy and oversized aerospace components.
  • Ensure fixture designs comply with ISRO specifications, aerospace standards, and safety norms.
  • Prepare detailed 2D drawings, 3D models, BOMs, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Support shop-floor trials, fixture validation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Work closely with vendors for fixture fabrication, inspection and qualification.

Required Experience

  • Proven experience in cryogenic tank projects (LOX / LH₂ tanks preferred).
  • Strong background in welding fixture design for aerospace or defense applications.
  • Hands-on exposure to large diameter thin-wall cylindrical structures, domes, and shells.
  • Knowledge in GTAW / GMAW welding processes used in cryogenic fabrication.
  • Familiarity with vertical fit-up planning and assembly sequence engineering.

Technical Skills

  • CAD Tools: CATIA / NX / SolidWorks / Creo
  • Knowledge of fixture design principles, tolerance stack-up, and deformation control
  • Understanding of cryogenic materials (Al alloys, SS, Inconel – as applicable)
  • Basic knowledge of structural analysis and load calculations for fixtures
  • Awareness of aerospace quality systems and documentation

Qualifications

  • BE / BTech / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline
  • Certification or training in tool design or fixture design is an added advantage
