What will you be doing
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mid-Level Design Language System (DLS) Designer, also known as a Subject Matter Expert (SME), to play a pivotal role in the creation, evolution, and maintenance of our core Design Language System. The ideal candidate will have 4–6 years of dedicated experience designing scalable component libraries, managing design tokens, defining cross-platform UX patterns, and ensuring the DLS serves as a single source of truth for design and engineering across multiple products and brands. This role requires a forward-thinking individual who can integrate modern advancements, including AI-assisted tooling, to enhance DLS efficiency and maintainability.
DLS Design & Development
- Component Ownership: Lead the end-to-end design, specification, and iteration of reusable UI components (e.g., buttons, inputs, navigation, complex data visualizations).
- Token Strategy: Define and manage the architecture of our design tokens (color, typography, spacing, depth, motion) to ensure systematic consistency and flexibility for brand variations.
- Pattern Definition: Define clear, accessible, and inclusive UX patterns for common user flows (e.g., data entry, error states, confirmations, search).
- Cross-Brand Scalability: Architect and manage component variations and themes necessary to support multiple brands, sub-brands, or product lines, using token layering and theming strategies.
Documentation & Governance
- System Documentation: Create, maintain, and enforce comprehensive DLS documentation (usage guidelines, accessibility standards, component anatomy, rationale) for designers, engineers, and product managers.
- Contribution Model: Establish and manage a clear contribution, review, and release process (versioning) for the DLS, ensuring quality and adoption across all teams.
- Training & Advocacy: Act as the DLS advocate, training designers and engineers on best practices, adoption, and the value of system thinking.
Innovation & Tooling
- Advanced Tooling: Actively explore, evaluate, and integrate advanced design and development tools, focusing on methods to automate DLS maintenance, improve component handoff (Design-to-Code), and enhance token management.
- AI Integration: Investigate and prototype how AI and generative design tools can be used to accelerate DLS creation, quality assurance, accessibility checks, or the rapid creation of themed variations.
Required Skills & Experience
- Experience: 6–9 years of professional experience in UX/UI Design, with at least 3 years focused specifically on creating, maintaining, and scaling a Design Language System for a complex product ecosystem.
- System Thinking: Deep understanding of atomic design principles, system architecture, and how design decisions impact engineering and long-term product maintenance.
- Visual & Interaction Design: Exceptional visual design skills, paired with a solid understanding of interaction design principles, usability, and accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA/AAA).
- Familiarity with Code: While not a coding role, a strong understanding of how front-end frameworks (React, Angular, Vue) consume design systems is essential for successful collaboration.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex system concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Technical Tools Proficiency
- Design & Prototyping: Expert proficiency in Figma (specifically in Library creation, Variants, Auto Layout, and Component properties).
- Token Management: Experience with dedicated token management tools such as Style Dictionary, Specify, or Supernova.
- DLS Documentation: Familiarity with documentation platforms like Zeroheight, Storybook, or internal company wikis.
- Collaboration: Proficient with Git/GitHub workflows for design asset management and version control (e.g., branching, merging).
Application Instructions
- As part of your application, please include a link or PDF of your portfolio of recent work, highlighting your abilities and experience relevant to the role, with specific examples of how you work, think, collaborate, and contribute to great design outcomes. Please note that we are unable to accept any applications without a portfolio.
