Manitoba Wildfire Service is seeking highly motivated individuals interested in filling the role of District Fire Ranger 3 in the Eastern Region of Manitoba.

The Manitoba Government has a comprehensive benefits package, which includes extended health care, health spending account, dental care, vision care, long term disability insurance, group life insurance and defined pension plan.

This competition will be used to fill District Fire Ranger (FR3) positions throughout the Eastern Region for the 2026 Wildfire Season.

Duties:

Under the direction of the Area Fire Manager, the incumbent will provide direct supervision of the District Fire Rangers (FR2) and is responsible to ensure the safe, efficient and effective operation of their assigned Wildfire District Warehouse.

  • Ensures that the district fire equipment inventory, vehicles, supplies and caches are accounted for and maintained in serviceable condition to Provincial Standards.
  • Plans, coordinates, supervises and works on minor construction and repair of Wildfire Service infrastructure maintenance projects.
  • Organizes, coordinates and directs forest fire suppression support activities including, but not limited to: arranging for support staff and lodging, hiring emergency fire fighters, ordering food, commissary, supplies, equipment and supervising the loading and unloading of support aircraft.
  • Promotes fire crew safety, ensures compliance with Workplace Safety & Health Regulations at District Wildfire Service facilities, reports violations, incidents or accidents and implements preventative or corrective measures.
  • Maintains detailed records of staffing, crew operations and equipment inventories, prepares and submits Fire Administration or regional administration forms and prepares necessary reports.
  • Assists the Helitac Officer and performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Experience as a Fire Ranger or as a member of an Initial Attack Crew or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience using and maintaining standard fire fighting hand tools and equipment available and/or issued to Fire Suppression Crews. eg: shovel, axe, pulaski, various fire pumps, fire hose, chain saws.
  • Experience working in conjunction with various aircraft utilized during forest fire suppression activities along with an understanding of their individual roles and capabilities. eg: light and medium helicopters, fixed wing aircraft, water bombers.
  • Supervisor skills with experience providing guidance, direction, and performance management.
  • Knowledge and/or training of fire line safety and applicable Workplace Safety & Health Regulations.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, strong organizational skills and time management.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Must possess and maintain a valid full stage Manitoba Class 5 driver's licence or equivalent.
  • Must maintain current certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Must be physically capable to perform the duties required of the position such as lifting, carrying and loading firefighting equipment, and working in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be willing and able to work weekends, overtime, and be deployed provincially, inter-provincially, or internationally as/when required.
  • All candidates must be 18 years of ago or older prior to start date.
