Director of Software Engineering

Role description: This role is with one of our portfolio companies.

We are looking for a senior engineering leader to lead the technology and engineering charter for one of our consumer-focused portfolio companies.

You will work closely with the founders and product leadership to define the technology strategy, build a high-performing engineering organisation, and create scalable and reliable technology systems that can support the company's growth.

This is a leadership role that requires a combination of strong technical depth, product thinking, organisational leadership and execution excellence.

Key Responsibilities:

• Technology Strategy & Architecture: Define the technology roadmap and architecture, ensuring scalability, reliability, security and long-term technical excellence.
• Engineering Leadership: Lead and mentor engineering teams and managers, establish strong engineering practices, and build a culture of ownership and high performance.
• Product Partnership: Work closely with founders, product and business teams to translate business priorities into effective technology solutions and accelerate product velocity.
• Organisation Building: Hire, develop and retain high-quality engineering talent while building a strong leadership bench.
• Technical Excellence: Drive improvements across system design, engineering productivity, infrastructure, observability, quality and technical debt.
• Scale & Reliability: Build robust systems and processes that can support increasing product complexity, customer scale and business requirements.
• Innovation & AI: Identify opportunities to leverage AI, automation and emerging technologies to improve the product and create competitive advantage.
• Exhibit a roll-up-your-sleeves entrepreneurial spirit, be a team player, and have a track record of leading and mentoring employees.

What We're Looking For:

• BS/MS/Phd degree in engineering/technology.
• 12+ years of engineering experience, with significant experience in senior engineering leadership roles.
• Strong technical foundation across architecture, backend systems, distributed systems, APIs, databases and cloud infrastructure.
• Experience leading multiple engineering teams and developing engineering managers/leaders.
• Track record of building and scaling high-performing engineering organisations.
• Strong product orientation and experience working closely with founders / product / business leadership.
• Experience in high-growth, product-led technology companies.
• Strong communication, stakeholder management and execution skills.

Good to Have

• Experience in D2C, e-commerce, marketplace, consumer internet or consumer technology.
• Experience with high-scale consumer products and transaction-heavy platforms.
• Exposure to AI/ML, data platforms or AI-led product development.
• Experience working in entrepreneurial, fast-paced environments.
• Strong track record of building teams and technology organisations through periods of rapid growth.
