Director of Engineering — Plum
The Director of Engineering at Plum will lead a high-performing engineering team through a fundamental shift in how software is built - leveraging AI as the engine that drives how we design, develop, test, and deploy. This role owns the execution of an AI-led Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) across Plum's engineering organization.
This is not a traditional engineering leadership role. We are looking for someone who has hands-on conviction that AI-augmented development from AI-assisted code generation and automated testing to agent-driven workflows is the present, not the future. The right candidate will have already operated in this mode and can now institutionalize it at scale.
As a member of Plum's leadership team, the Director of Engineering will set the standard for engineering velocity, quality, and innovation in an AI-first development culture.
Role Requirements
- Hands-on experience running an AI-augmented development workflow
- Strong software architecture and system design fundamentals.
- Track record of leading engineering teams through a meaningful process or technology transformation.
- Working knowledge of context and prompt engineering, sophisticated RAG systems, and AI agent frameworks as applied to developer productivity.
- Ability to measure and communicate AI-led SDLC impact (cycle time, throughput, cost, quality) to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Role Responsibilities
- Design and run the end-to-end development lifecycle with AI tooling (code generation, automated review, agent-driven testing, AI-assisted deployments) deeply integrated at each stage.
- Lead a team of 35+ engineers to ship at a velocity that reflects AI-augmented capacity. Build internal playbooks and standards so every engineer operates effectively in an AI-augmented environment.
- Own the engineering roadmap. Collaborate with product and business teams to ship high-quality features at a pace that reflects AI-augmented capacity.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with stakeholders, including executives, product managers, and designers.
