Job Purpose:
The Accounting Director is responsible for leading and managing all accounting operations, financial reporting, statutory compliance, and internal controls for the Ports & Terminals business. The role ensures accurate financial management across terminal operations, marine services, cargo handling, logistics activities, infrastructure assets, and associated commercial operations.
The position plays a critical role in supporting business growth, operational efficiency, investment planning, and financial governance within a complex, asset-intensive port environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Financial Leadership & Accounting Operations
- Lead the end-to-end accounting function for ports, terminals, and associated logistics operations.
- Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, treasury accounting, and inventory accounting activities.
- Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
- Manage consolidation of financial statements across multiple terminals, subsidiaries, or joint ventures.
- Ensure compliance with IFRS, local statutory regulations, tax requirements, and corporate finance policies.
- Develop and implement robust accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Ports & Terminals Financial Management
- Oversee accounting treatment for port revenues including vessel handling, container operations, bulk cargo, storage, demurrage, marine services, and concession-related income.
- Monitor accounting for large-scale infrastructure assets including cranes, berths, terminal equipment, and marine assets.
- Ensure proper capitalization, depreciation, and impairment assessments for high-value operational assets.
- Support concession accounting, lease accounting, and long-term port infrastructure agreements.
- Partner with operations teams to improve financial visibility across terminal throughput, utilization, and operational costs.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Prepare and review financial statements, management reports, and board-level reporting packs.
- Coordinate annual external audits and manage relationships with auditors, regulatory authorities, and government entities.
- Ensure adherence to corporate governance standards and compliance frameworks.
- Lead tax reporting, VAT compliance, and regulatory filings across jurisdictions where applicable.
Budgeting & Strategic Support
- Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial planning processes.
- Provide financial analysis on terminal expansion projects, CAPEX investments, concession bids, and operational improvement initiatives.
- Support feasibility studies, investment appraisals, and commercial decision-making.
- Deliver financial insights and KPIs to support operational and strategic objectives.
Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting and finance team.
- Drive a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
- Build finance capabilities aligned with the evolving needs of the ports and logistics business.
Qualifications & Experience
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA, ACCA, CA, CMA, or equivalent professional qualification preferred
- MBA or Master's Degree is an advantage
Experience
- 12–15+ years of progressive finance and accounting experience
- Minimum 5 years in a senior finance leadership role within:
- Ports & Terminals
- Maritime
- Shipping
- Logistics
- Infrastructure or Heavy Asset industries
- Strong understanding of port operations and terminal business models
- Experience managing large-scale, multi-entity accounting environments
- Proven experience in IFRS reporting, audits, and regulatory compliance
