About BCCL
Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. (BCCL) is one of India's largest media conglomerates, with a legacy dating back to 1838 and a portfolio that includes The Times of India, The Economic Times, Mumbai Mirror, Navbharat Times, Maharashtra Times, and Vijay Karnataka. Across print, digital, branded content, out-of-home, and experiential platforms, BCCL combines trusted journalism, audience insight, and innovation to shape conversations at scale.
About 1838
1838 is a cultural platform and community for creative entrepreneurs and cultural tastemakers. Through its space, magazine, events, and media, it brings people and ideas together, extending the creative life of the community beyond its physical space.
The Opportunity:
The Digital Editor owns everything 1838 publishes that isn't the print magazine. The Creative Head set's the media voice; the Digital Editor runs it — the newsletter, the online community content, the social channels, the website, and the editorial packaging of the video podcast. You are how the community experiences 1838 between events and between issues, and how the broader creative world first discovers it. 10–12 years of building and growing digital editorial audiences.
The boundary is clean: the Business Head owns media monetisation; you own the content and the audience.
What You Will Do:
- Newsletter Editorial: Edit and create original newsletter content, including the community digest, in 1838's distinctive voice, connecting the physical space, magazine, and digital community.
- Online Community: Own content across the private member community and public-facing platforms, fostering conversations among members and attracting the wider creative community to 1838.
- Social Media: Manage social channels, translating 1838's editorial identity and cultural sensibility into engaging daily content, with an editorial-led rather than marketing-led approach.
- Website Management: Own the website as 1838's digital front door and editorial archive, ensuring content remains engaging, relevant, and aligned with the platform's identity.
- Video Podcast Editorial: Shape the editorial packaging and digital distribution of video podcasts, including titles, show notes, clips, and platform-specific content.
- Digital Audience Growth: Grow 1838's owned audiences across email, social media, and community membership.
- Build Digital Editorial Operations: Establish the digital editorial calendar, tools, publishing workflows, and voice guidelines to create a consistent and scalable digital presence.
What You Bring:
- A Digital-Native Editor: 10–12 years of experience building and growing digital editorial audiences across newsletters, social media, online communities, or a combination of these. You understand what makes people subscribe, engage, share, and return.
- A Strong Writer and Editor: Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to create compelling newsletters and maintain a consistent editorial voice. You can develop and uphold 1838's distinctive tone.
- Audience Growth Expertise: An understanding of audience acquisition, engagement, distribution, and digital platforms, with the ability to balance growth metrics with editorial quality.
- Multi-Format Storytelling: The ability to adapt content across newsletters, social media, podcast clips, and online communities while maintaining a consistent brand voice.
- A Community-First Mindset: An understanding of how to build and nurture online communities through thoughtful content, meaningful conversations, and active engagement.
- An Entrepreneurial Approach: The drive to build and scale 1838's digital presence from the ground up, with the creativity and initiative to shape its editorial identity and audience.
- Relevant Background: Experience as a Digital Editor, Newsletter Editor, Social Media Editor, Content Editor, Community Editor, or in an Audience Development role, preferably with a publication, media brand, or community-led platform. Demonstrated success in growing digital audiences while maintaining strong editorial standards is essential.
Education:
A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mass Communication, Journalism, English, Literature, Media Studies, Advertising, or a related discipline is desirable. Strong writing and storytelling ability, creative thinking, digital content expertise, cultural awareness, and a demonstrated track record of building and growing digital audiences will carry significant weight.
Equal Opportunity:
BCCL is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace and consider applicants without discrimination based on gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, religion, caste, ethnicity, marital status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law. Candidates who need reasonable accommodation during the recruitment process may inform the recruiter.
Note: The advertised role title is indicative. The final designation will be as per company norms.
