Design System Engineer Design Systems

Position Summary

We are looking for a Design System Engineer to join Cencora and help develop and evolve a shared design system used across enterprise products and platforms. This role is well-suited for a front-end engineer with experience building reusable UI components and ready to deepen their expertise in design systems, accessibility, and scalable front-end architecture.

This role operates within established design system architecture and is focused on execution, quality, and continued skill growth.

The Design Systems Engineer will work closely with designers and engineers to implement framework-agnostic components, support documentation and tooling, and help ensure consistent, accessible user experiences across teams.

The Design Systems Engineer Will

  • Build and maintain reusable UI components within an established design system.
  • Implement web components using modern standards and libraries, including Web Awesome/Shoelace.
  • Apply WCAG-informed accessibility best practices in component development.
  • Collaborate with designers to translate design specifications into production-ready components.
  • Contribute to and maintain component documentation in Storybook.
  • Support design system tooling, versioning, and release processes.
  • Support the adoption of the design system by assisting design, engineering, and product teams.
  • Participate in code reviews and testing to maintain quality and consistency.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of front-end standards and workflows.

A Successful Candidate Should

  • Have solid front-end engineering experience and a strong grasp of modern web fundamentals.
  • Be comfortable working with shared component libraries and design systems.
  • Have working knowledge of accessibility principles and inclusive design practices.
  • Be collaborative and open to feedback from designers, engineers, and product partners.
  • Be motivated to grow technical depth and design system expertise.

Primary Duties And Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain design system components using Web Components or similar technologies.
  • Implement CSS architecture, theming, and token-based styling approaches.
  • Write maintainable, well-documented code aligned with established standards.
  • Maintain Storybook documentation as a source of truth for components.
  • Use and contribute to established tooling and CI/CD workflows, including Azure Pipelines.
  • Respond to questions and feedback from consuming teams to improve usability and adoption.

Experience And Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Web Development, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 3-5 years of professional front-end or UI engineering experience.
  • Experience contributing to a design system or shared component library in a production environment.

Minimum Skills, Knowledge, And Abilities

  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript or TypeScript.
  • Experience with Web Components and related libraries or frameworks (Lit or similar).
  • Familiarity with Shoelace or similar component libraries.
  • Experience using Storybook or comparable component documentation tools.
  • Understanding of CSS architecture, theming, and design tokens.
  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards and testing practices.
  • Familiarity with modern front-end tooling and workflows.
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines, including Azure Pipelines.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines.
  • Learns through pairing and informal knowledge sharing.

Experience & Educational Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or any other related discipline or equivalent related experience. 3+ years of directly-related or relevant experience, preferably in software designing and development.
