Job Title: Design Engineer – Wiring Harness (Automotive)
Job Description
This role focuses on the end‑to‑end design and routing of automotive wiring harnesses using CATIA V5/V6 and 3DEXPERIENCE. The Design Engineer defines optimized harness architectures and routing strategies that reduce weight and cost while meeting Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) requirements. The position requires close collaboration with Electrical & Electronics Systems Engineering teams, suppliers, and internal stakeholders to deliver robust, manufacturable, and serviceable harness solutions for complex vehicle systems.
Responsibilities
- Develop and refine wiring harness routing concepts and detailed designs using CATIA V5/V6 and 3DEXPERIENCE.
- Define optimized harness architectures and routing strategies that minimize weight and cost while fully complying with EMC requirements.
- Collaborate closely with Electrical & Electronics Systems Engineering (EESE) teams to create concepts and design proposals for vehicle programs.
- Independently lead and conduct technical design reviews, clearly articulating harness design challenges and trade-offs to engineers, suppliers, and stakeholders.
- Resolve complex interface and packaging challenges related to wiring harnesses and electrical/electronic modules and systems.
- Perform benchmarking and packaging studies on electrical and electronic modules and systems, and define their locations within the vehicle.
- Apply knowledge of vehicle architecture, aggregate groups, sub-groups, systems, and sub-systems to ensure coherent harness integration.
- Evaluate and decide on manufacturing feasibility, ensuring harness designs are suitable for production processes.
- Assess assembly and service feasibility to ensure harness designs support efficient installation and maintenance.
- Use Teamcenter Engineering and Vismockup to manage product data, visualize packaging, and validate designs in a digital environment.
- Communicate effectively with program stakeholders and suppliers to align design decisions, resolve issues, and drive consensus.
- Work both independently and collaboratively with team members to meet project milestones and deliver high-quality design outputs.
- Demonstrate proactive ownership of assigned tasks, ensuring timely completion and adherence to quality standards.
Essential Skills
- 6–10 years of hands-on experience in automotive wiring harness design and packaging of electrical and electronic components.
- Extensive working experience with CATIA V5 and 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX), including Electrical Harness Design, Part Modelling, and Surface Design.
- Strong expertise in wiring harness routing and resolving complex interface challenges in automotive applications.
- Proven ability to define optimized harness architectures and routing strategies that meet EMC requirements while minimizing weight and cost.
- Experience conducting benchmarking and packaging studies for electrical and electronic modules and systems in vehicles.
- Solid knowledge of vehicle architecture, vehicle aggregate groups, sub-groups, systems, and sub-systems.
- Proficiency in assessing manufacturing feasibility for harness designs.
- Ability to evaluate assembly and service feasibility for harness and component layouts.
- Good knowledge and practical experience with Teamcenter Engineering and Vismockup.
- Strong communication skills for engaging effectively with program stakeholders and suppliers.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Proactive, self-starting mindset with a strong sense of ownership and commitment to high-quality results.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Mechanical design supporting robust packaging and integration of electrical and electronic components.
- Experience in design reviews and cross-functional collaboration with engineering teams and suppliers.
- Ability to clearly present technical issues and solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving skills for addressing complex packaging and interface issues in vehicle environments.
