The Opportunity
We are looking for a highly driven and detail-oriented Deputy Payroll Head to join our People Operations team. This role is ideal for a payroll professional who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment, thrives on process excellence, and understands the importance of delivering a seamless employee experience.
As Deputy Payroll Head, you will play a key role in ensuring payroll accuracy, compliance, process efficiency, and operational governance across the organization. You will work closely with HR, Finance, Compliance, and business leaders to strengthen payroll processes and support a growing workforce spread across multiple locations.
Key Responsibilities
Payroll Operations
- Manage end-to-end payroll activities, ensuring timely and accurate salary processing.
- Oversee payroll inputs including attendance, leave records, salary revisions, reimbursements, incentives, and full & final settlements.
- Ensure payroll transactions are processed with the highest levels of accuracy, confidentiality, and compliance.
- Continuously review payroll workflows and identify opportunities to enhance efficiency and employee experience.
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure adherence to all statutory requirements, including PF, ESI, Professional Tax, Income Tax, Labour Welfare Fund, Gratuity, and other applicable regulations.
- Manage statutory filings, audits, reconciliations, and regulatory reporting.
- Stay updated on changes in payroll legislation and proactively implement required updates.
- Strengthen payroll controls and ensure compliance with internal policies and audit standards.
Process Improvement & Automation
- Drive initiatives focused on payroll automation, digitization, and process optimization.
- Collaborate with HRMS and technology teams to improve payroll systems and reporting capabilities.
- Establish and maintain robust payroll processes that support organizational growth and scalability.
Reporting & Business Support
- Prepare payroll MIS, headcount reports, cost analysis, and management dashboards.
- Partner with Finance teams on payroll reconciliations, budgeting support, and audit requirements.
- Generate insights and recommendations that help improve operational efficiency and workforce planning.
Stakeholder & Team Collaboration
- Serve as a trusted partner to HR, Finance, Compliance, and Operations teams.
- Resolve payroll-related escalations and provide timely support to employees and stakeholders.
- Mentor and support payroll team members while fostering a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
What We're Looking For
Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Commerce, Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, or a related field.
- 5–6 years of experience in payroll operations and statutory compliance.
- Experience managing payroll in a large, multi-location organization.
- Exposure to payroll audits, reporting, compliance management, and employee lifecycle payroll processes.
- Additional certifications or postgraduate qualifications will be an advantage.
Skills & Expertise
- Strong understanding of Indian payroll regulations, taxation, and labour laws.
- Hands-on experience with HRMS, payroll software, ERP platforms, and payroll reporting tools.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and payroll analytics.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
- Ability to balance operational execution with process improvement initiatives.
