Job Summary
Lead shipping operations with full P&L responsibility, optimizing costs and yields through strategic vessel selection, route planning, and customer relationship management to drive business growth and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Manage full profit and loss accountability to ensure business profitability and sustainability
- Optimize cost efficiency by selecting vessels with appropriate size, speed, and bunker consumption aligned to volume prospects and port capabilities
- Monitor daily bunker consumption using system data to ensure vessel performance aligns with Time Charter Description and benchmark against sister ships
- Secure port call berth windows to maintain schedule integrity and operational efficiency
- Analyze and control indirect costs to support financial targets
- Manage and resolve cargo, container, and vessel damage claims in coordination with legal teams
- Strategize trade routes by analyzing market demand and supply to enhance service coverage and sailing frequency through own deployment or slot swaps
- Maintain high vessel schedule integrity to meet feeder-to-mother vessel connections and provide timely ETA and ETD updates to customers
- Collaborate with marketing to select customers and deals, actively participate in tender exercises
- Identify and implement General Rate Increases (GRIs), Rate Restorations (RRs), and Critical Bunker Recoveries (CBRs) in response to cost changes across managed trades
- Coordinate rate quotations and filings with marketing to support revenue management
- Manage agencies involved in vessel operations, cargo bookings, and customer relationship management at local service locations
- Engage actively in marketing efforts, especially with key clients introduced by marketing, and manage client relations during operational crises
- Conduct business development by reviewing trade route viability and adapting to operational or market changes
- Evaluate feasibility of new services, solo or via consortiums through vessel sharing agreements
- Make quick, effective decisions and communicate strategies clearly during operational or business crises
- Maintain professional relationships with external clients, port and terminal operators, and business partners
- Stay informed on the rapidly changing business environment through personal involvement and feedback channels including media
- Develop a strong understanding of current market conditions and long-term business outlook to identify opportunities and risks
- Prepare and position the right assets (ships) to meet future challenges and opportunities
Required competencies and certifications
- Minimum 10 years of sales experience in Shipping Carriers or Freight Forwarding
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Chinese, including reading and writing Chinese for reporting and liaison with Shanghai Headquarters
- Strong understanding of shipping carriers, freight forwarding, and supply chain solutions markets, with preference for industry vertical specialization
