Job Summary: This role encompasses the foundational training and practical experience necessary for aspiring officers (Deck Cadet) and skilled ratings (GP Rating) within the Deck and Engine departments, specifically on Container and Bulk Carrier vessels. Individuals in this role contribute to the safe operation, maintenance, and cleanliness of the vessel while gaining essential maritime knowledge and skills under the supervision of senior officers and ratings.
Duties and Responsibilities:
For Deck Cadets:
- Assist the Deck Officers in all aspects of navigation, including bridge watchkeeping, chart corrections, and the use of navigational equipment.
- Participate actively in cargo operations, including loading, discharging, and securing various types of cargo on container and bulk carrier vessels.
- Learn and apply knowledge of international maritime regulations (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL) and the company's Safety Management System.
- Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of the vessel's hull, superstructure, deck equipment, and life-saving and firefighting appliances.
- Engage in routine deck work such as chipping, painting, greasing, and general cleanliness.
- Actively participate in mooring and unmooring operations.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation as required for training and operational purposes.
- Undergo structured onboard training, completing all assigned tasks and maintaining a training record book.
- Participate in safety drills and emergency preparedness exercises.
For GP Ratings:
- Perform various duties within both the Deck and Engine departments as assigned by officers or senior ratings.
- Deck Duties: Assist in watchkeeping, steering, cargo handling (securing and unrecurring), mooring operations, and general deck maintenance including chipping, painting, and cleaning.
- Engine Duties: Assist engineers in the routine maintenance, lubrication, and cleaning of engine room machinery, including main and auxiliary engines, pumps, and other systems.
- Ensure adherence to all safety regulations, company procedures, and environmental protection protocols.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in assigned areas, both on deck and within the engine room.
- Participate in all safety drills and emergency procedures.
- Carry out any other tasks as directed by the Master, Chief Officer, or Chief Engineer to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.
