Job Description

Data Analyst / Analytics Engineer

Engagement: Contract | Seniority: Mid-level | Experience: 3–5 years

Contract Engagement: Contractor (individual or via agency) | Expected duration: End of 2026 (potential to extend) | Start: May 2026 | Location: Remote | Time zone overlap: EST, IST, and UK as noted below

Contractor Role Details

  • Engagement model: You will partner with the SVP of Data & Product Analytics (business owner), who will set priorities and accept deliverables. You will not have people-management responsibilities.
  • Primary outputs: Production-ready reporting assets across Global Analytics Platforms (Power BI dashboards, report-level measures, report logic documentation, and clear reporting requirements). You will partner with the Power BI developer, Senior Analytics Engineer, and Data Engineer so the right curated tables/views exist for reporting needs.
  • Ways of working: Async-first, with written specs, review cycles, and lightweight live syncs during overlap hours.
  • Access and tooling: Work will be performed in company-managed systems (for example, Power BI, Databricks, and documentation tools) subject to required onboarding and access approvals.

About The Team

You'll be joining the Global Analytics Platforms pillar at Guy Carpenter, a leading reinsurance business within Marsh. The Data & Product Analytics team works under the SVP of Data & Product Analytics and partners with actuarial users, product owners, and platform engineers based in the UK and US. Our data platform, built on Databricks, powers all product, catastrophe modeling and actuarial insights. This contract role will help deliver and maintain reporting across our Global Analytics Platforms, working alongside one full-time Power BI developer and one data engineer. In 2026 we're building the layer that makes our data more trustworthy, self-serviceable, and consumable by both analysts and AI agents.

What You'll Do

  • Build and maintain Power BI dashboards for colleagues and leadership audiences, including the report layout, dataset configuration, DAX measures, and clear documentation so reports remain reliable and repeatable
  • Write reporting requirements for specific dashboards and analytics use cases (source fields, business rules, and acceptance checks), so the data engineer and Senior Analytics Engineer can build the needed curated tables and views
  • Define report-level measures and documentation by maintaining DAX measures, report logic notes, and business definitions for dashboards; propose updates to the team glossary/metric standards when inconsistencies are discovered
  • Run data quality checks for reporting by identifying gaps and anomalies in MetaRisk data, documenting findings, and partnering with the Senior Analytics Engineer and data engineer to resolve issues at the right layer
  • Improve reporting reliability at the edges by tracking dataset readiness for key reports, documenting recurring issues (definitions, access, refresh failures), and coordinating with the Power BI developer, Senior Analytics Engineer, and data engineer on fixes
  • Build Databricks notebooks for SQL-based analysis, validation, and ad-hoc actuarial reporting/extracts where Power BI is not the right tool (not production pipeline ownership)

Role boundaries: This contract role focuses on reporting delivery (Power BI build/maintenance, report-level measures, reporting requirements, documentation, and data quality triage). The Senior Analytics Engineer (Data Products) owns the data products layer: Unity Catalog operating patterns, silver/gold transformation design, cross-product aggregated canonical datasets, semantic layer and metric standards, and data contracts/quality checks (with the Data Engineer owning production pipeline releases).

What We're Looking For

Required

  • 3–5 years in a data analyst, analytics engineer, or BI developer role
  • SQL complex queries, joins, and aggregations without assistance
  • Power BI (preferred) or other data visualization tool, hands-on experience building reports and data models
  • Databricks, working experience with SQL endpoints or notebook-based analytics
  • Strong documentation skills, metric definitions, data dictionaries, and analysis write-ups that non-technical stakeholders rely on
  • Enough understanding of data warehousing (schemas, grain, aggregations) to write meaningful requirements for a data engineer

Nice to Have

  • Python: working knowledge sufficient for notebook-based data manipulation
  • Familiarity with data governance concepts (catalogs, permissions, data quality checks) and comfort working within established standards
  • Experience in financial services, insurance, or actuarial data environments

How You'll Work

This role receives work directly from the SVP of Data & Product Analytics and operates async-first: you are expected to manage your deliverables, communicate progress in writing, and flag blockers early. You'll collaborate closely with our full-time Power BI developer, data engineer, and Senior Analytics Engineer, and engage with product actuaries to understand reporting needs. The work is balanced between delivery (dashboards, notebooks, analytical use cases) and documentation (metric definitions, requirements, and report logic notes) both are important to how the team operates.

Success in the first 60 to 90 days looks like:

  • Priority Power BI dashboards and enhancements are shipped, validated with actuarial users, and used on a regular basis.
  • Report logic, business definitions, and DAX measures for key dashboards are documented well enough that stakeholders can interpret results consistently and changes are reviewable.
  • Recurring reporting pain points are reduced (refresh failures, broken filters, unclear definitions) through targeted fixes and a maintained issue log with owners and next actions.
  • Reporting requirements are consistently high quality (clear grain, fields, rules, and acceptance checks), enabling the Senior Analytics Engineer and Data Engineer to deliver the right curated tables/views with minimal back-and-forth.
  • Coordination with the Power BI developer is smooth (shared conventions, reusable measures where appropriate, consistent visuals), and reporting support extends effectively across Global Analytics Platforms.

Hours (commentary): The team runs a data workstream sync at 8:45am EST (7:15pm IST) on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Availability through approximately 10:00–10:30am EST (8:00–8:30pm IST) on those days is preferred. Outside of that overlap window, work is self-directed and async.
