Data Engineer, ZTD R&D

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES(100%)

Business Analysis(15%)

• Perform autonomous business analysis for data-based use cases, engaging with SMEs to answer questions, gather feedback, and conduct early analysis spikes to investigate datasets.
• Create accurate entity mappings for data integrations and transformations, including business rules.
• Develop entity relationship diagrams to document data development cases, such as process flows, entity source-to-target mappings, and database structures.
• Define scope, approach, and direction for assigned project objectives, in consultation with the technical lead to ensure alignment with business goals.
• Determine the appropriate frequency and mode of data staging, from near-real-time streaming to daily wipe-reload.
• Identify appropriate means of data provisioning, including file-based or table consumption, or visualization.

Data Analysis(25%)

• Analyze incoming data (from raw datasets, database tables, APIs, etc.) to understand its potential, necessary transformations, and issues.
• Perform data cleanup independently.
• Profile datasets to detect anomalies, alignments, and patterns.
• Proactively define probable data rules and confirm unknown concepts with domain technical owners.
• Understand and apply AI tools and technologies, leveraging pretrained models for daily tasks.
• Provide L3/L4 support for production data issues, utilizing advanced query capabilities and ETL troubleshooting skills. Guide contracted resources when needed.

Data Development(50%)

• Design and develop data solutions from prototype to production, including ETLs, integrations, analyses, limited data apps, and visualizations.
• Automate data pipelines using scripting and ETL tools.
• Manage and monitor pipeline execution, and design and implement error handling capabilities.
• Set up orchestration jobs and perform data migration analysis (evaluation, mapping, and process flow diagramming).
• Oversee execution of data migration tasks during system deployment and handle migration issues.
• Apply ACID principles for database management and understand different data loading strategies (e.g., wipe/reload, upsert, CDC).
• Recognize varying data loading latencies (batch to near-realtime) and approach accordingly.
• Oversee contract resources to execute design and development for data products.
• Ensure the overall quality of data solutions.
• Apply Agile principles, such as failing fast and delivering minimum viable products (MVP).
• Participate in project management activities, including stand-ups and sprint reviews.
• Take responsibility for assigned tasks and delegate where appropriate.
• Create technical design specifications and document workflows.
• Perform unit testing, peer reviews, and regression testing to ensure ongoing functionality.
• Create deployment and installation documentation, overseeing deployment processes, including verification and hypercare.

Data Architecture(10%)

• Recognize key VMRD data entities and understand how they relate to enhance cross-use case linkability.
• Identify approaches to acquire additional metadata for key VMRD entities.
• Apply Master Data Management (MDM) principles.
• Ensure data security in applications, visualizations, databases, and files, and apply role-based security.
• Handle sensitive data such as Personal Information (PI) and Intellectual Property (IP) in accordance with best practices.
• Understand the technical impacts of GxP-related systems and processes.
• Build and enhance knowledge of both the technical and business functional landscape for VMRD.
• Collaborate with Systems Engineers on app-related projects to improve processes and knowledge.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Undergraduate degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent education/work experience).
• 5-8+ years of experience in designing, building, and supporting data applications (3-6+ years with a Master's degree).
• Experience with multiple vendors and departments for service and support.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build effective relationships.
• Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary teams across multiple locations and time zones.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and drive progress in ambiguous situations.

TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIREMENTS

• Familiarity with structured and unstructured data approaches.
• Strong experience with ETL tools (e.g., Alteryx, Python, Informatica, Databricks).
• Experience with scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, and R.
• Proficiency in SQL Server and/or Oracle databases and strong SQL query writing.
• Working knowledge of T-SQL and/or PL/SQL.
• Expert experience with data analysis and troubleshooting.
• Basic understanding of statistics.
• Familiarity with Power BI and/or Tableau for visualizations.
• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel for data manipulation and analysis.
• Some experience using pretrained GenAI tools for code acceleration.
• Software testing experience, including unit, integration, and regression testing.
• Skilled in technical writing for SDLC documentation.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT SKILLS

• Experience working within a Solution Delivery Lifecycle Management framework.
• Familiarity with Agile and Waterfall development methodologies.
• Ability to self-manage targeted projects and delegate tasks effectively.
