Job Description

Job Title: Coral Care Technician The Coral Care Technician is a more experienced role, which is a transition role between the entry level Coral Care Assistant towards a more experienced Coral Husbandry Technician role. They play a vital role in supporting the daily operations of the Facility by ensuring a clean and healthy environment for the corals. This position focuses on the essential tasks of coral cleaning and feeding, ensuring these practices align with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and biosecurity measures. The assistant will work under the close supervision of the KCRI Senior Coral Technician and Coral Specialists. • Gently clean coral fragments and colonies to remove algae and debris, ensuring careful handling at all times. • Maintain the cleanliness of tank interiors, substrates, and other surfaces within the coral holding systems. • Assist with the care and maintenance of co-culture organisms used for cleaning, such as snails and crabs. • Participate in training to gain skills in advanced husbandry techniques. • Prepare animal-based coral feed (e.g., shrimp, fish) according to provided instructions. • Conduct feeding tasks for corals under direct supervision. • Assist with the organization and cleaning of equipment directly related to coral care tasks (e.g.,feeding containers, cleaning tools). • Support data collection efforts related to cleaning and feeding schedules as instructed. • Adhere to all HSE standards, including the safe handling of any chemicals used for cleaning. • Report any observations of coral stress, unusual conditions, or potential problems to a supervisor immediately. • Report any incidents, near misses, or unsafe conditions immediately. Key Responsibilities following detailed training by the KCRI end user Competency: • Attention to detail, consistency, and a gentle approach in handling corals. • Ability to follow specific instructions and work within structured cleaning and feeding protocols. • Good communication skills and a willingness to work as part of a team. • Adaptability and a strong willingness to learn new techniques. • Reporting • Ability to communicate and learn in English is an essential skill. • A desire to learn a new skill and industry is recommended. Additional Requirements (Physical & Practical) • Ability to remain standing for extended periods while performing cleaning and feeding tasks. • Comfort with handling and preparing animal-based feeds (e.g., shrimp, fish). • No reluctance to work with live marine animals in a saltwater environment.
