Job Title: Control Engineer –Battery EnergyStorage Systems (BESS)

Location: Bengaluru, India

Experience: 5–10 Years

Business Unit: PES – EPS

Segment: Utility-Scale & Commercial & Industrial (C&I)

Role Summary

The BESS Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for the design Control Engineering for BESS Product Engineering team for Utility-scale and C&I energy storage solutions. this role focuses on end-to-end ownership of control algorithms across the full product lifecycle—from concept and system design through validation, certification, and global deployment.

Key Responsibilities

Control System Design & Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain control algorithms for Battery Energy Storage Systems, covering:
    • Power and energy management
    • Charge/discharge scheduling
    • Voltage, frequency, and reactive power control
    • Understand BMS design and step
    • Control Interface with EMS, BESS controller, PPS and other required Equipment's.
  • Develop control strategies for utility-scale and C&I applications, including:
    • Frequency regulation and grid services
    • Renewable energy integration
    • Peak shaving and energy arbitrage
    • Backup power and microgrid operation
  • Implement control functions on real-time controllers and industrial-grade embedded platforms.
Data Analysis, Simulation & Validation

  • Develop detailed control models using MATLAB/Simulink and equivalent tools.
  • Support model-based development and auto-code generation workflows where applicable.
  • Lead and execute SIL, HIL, and system-level validation to ensure robust control performance under:
    • Normal operating conditions
    • Grid disturbances and abnormal scenarios
    • Fault and recovery conditions
  • Analyse performance metrics and continuously improve stability, accuracy, and efficiency of control algorithms.
System Integration & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with PCS (Power Conversion System), BMS, EMS, system architecture, and grid compliance teams to ensure seamless integration.
  • Ensure coherent control behaviour across:
    • Inverter control layers
    • Battery and protection constraints
    • Site-level and fleet-level EMS commands
  • Support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and commissioning activities globally as needed.
Standards, Compliance & Product Lifecycle

  • Design controls compliant with global grid codes and utility interconnection requirements.
  • Support certification and product qualification activities for different regions.
  • Contribute to product roadmaps, reuse strategies, and platform standardization initiatives.
  • Create and maintain high-quality technical documentation, control specifications, and design review artefacts in line with OEM processes.
  • Participate in design reviews, failure analyses, and continuous improvement initiatives across product generations.

Required Skills & Experience

Technical Expertise

  • 5–10 years of experience in control engineering for power electronics, grid-connected systems, or energy storage products.
  • Strong proficiency in:
    • Control system theory and practical implementation
    • MATLAB/Simulink modeling and simulation
    • Real-time or embedded control systems
  • Solid understanding of:
    • Inverter-based power conversion systems
    • Battery operational limits and interaction with control layers
    • Coordinated control between BMS, PCS, and EMS
  • Experience with SIL / HIL testing and real-time simulators.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., CAN, Modbus).
Grid & System Knowledge

  • Hands-on experience with utility and C&I grid-connected systems.
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Voltage and frequency regulation
    • Grid-following and grid-supportive control strategies
    • Islanding, reconnection, and abnormal grid behavior
  • Exposure to international standards and grid codes relevant to stationary BESS.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Power Electronics, or related field.
  • Experience working within a large OEM or global product organization.
  • Knowledge of functional safety, redundancy, and fault-tolerant control concepts.
  • Exposure to multi-site development, global product deployment, or fleet-scale energy systems.
  • Experience supporting long-life infrastructure products with high reliability and availability requirements.
