The role sits within a multidisciplinary hospital environment focused on high-quality elective and emergency surgical care, outcomes-driven practice, and patient safety.
Primary Title: Consultant - General Surgeon
Role & Responsibilities
- Perform elective and emergency general surgical procedures, including advanced laparoscopic and open operations, with a focus on safe, evidence-based operative technique.
- Lead perioperative management: pre-op assessment, intra-op decision-making, and post-op follow-up to optimise patient outcomes and reduce complications.
- Provide on-call emergency surgical coverage and rapid decision-making for trauma and acute abdominal presentations.
- Supervise and mentor junior surgeons, residents, and theatre teams; contribute to training, case review, and morbidity & mortality meetings.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary care with anaesthesia, ICU, radiology, oncology and allied specialties to plan complex surgical pathways.
- Maintain clinical governance: participate in audits, maintain accurate medical records, adhere to hospital protocols and regulatory requirements.
Skills & Qualifications
Must-Have
- Postgraduate qualification in General Surgery (MS/DNB/MCh or equivalent) and valid registration with a State Medical Council.
- Proven consultant-level surgical experience in tertiary-care or high-volume hospital settings.
- Demonstrated competence in laparoscopic and open general surgical procedures.
- Experience managing emergency and trauma surgical cases with on-call responsibilities.
- Familiarity with perioperative critical care and post-operative complication management.
- Active commitment to clinical governance: audits, SOP adherence and outcome measurement.
Preferred
- Advanced laparoscopic fellowship or additional subspecialty training (e.g., colorectal, HPB, minimal access surgery).
- Experience with endoscopic procedures and minimally invasive approaches for complex cases.
- Track record of academic contributions (publications, teaching, guideline development) or leadership roles.
