The Caithness Integrated Midwifery Team are looking for a midwife to experience remote and rural midwifery practice for a 6-month secondment to our small, friendly Community Maternity Unit. The post offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced midwife, keen to practice midwife-led care and to develop skills as an autonomous practitioner in remote and rural practice.

The midwifery team provide maternity services within the community midwifery unit based in Caithness General Hospital, and across the Caithness and North Sutherland area. The service supports the choice of local birth in a low-risk environment, facilitates approximately up to 20 births annually and supports around 120 pregnant people throughout their pregnancy and postnatal journey.

To support the care and transfer of higher risk pregnancies and sick neonates the midwifery team work closely with NHS Highland Obstetric, Midwifery and Neonatal Maternity Unit team based in Raigmore Hospital, Inverness (approximately 110 miles away). The midwifery team work flexibly to provide a 24/7 service with an on-call provision. A full and current driving licence is essential for this post.

The Community Midwifery Unit is situated in Wick, the most northerly town on the East coast and within the beautiful county of Caithness with stunning scenery and dramatic coastlines. The town of Wick has a vibrant local community with many amenities including a supermarket, cafes, restaurants, takeaways, hotels and churches. There is a local High School in Wick and also in the nearby town of Thurso where there is a cinema and also a college. The area provides the opportunity to enjoy village life, explore the rural lochs and both sandy and rocky beaches. There is the opportunity to partake in wild swimming or surfing or to relax and watch the local wildlife including seals, puffins, deer, otters and orca. The vibrant city of Inverness is a 2-hour drive, train/bus journey where you will find travel links and many other shops and hotels.

This is a full-time post of 36 hours per week, to be worked in accordance with service requirements. Part-time hours will also be considered. The post is fixed term for 6 months, secondment cover.
