Position Summary

We are seeking a highly qualified Coastal Environmental Specialist with proven expertise in water quality modelling to support environmental and marine engineering projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating physical, chemical, and biological water quality processes, developing and reviewing numerical water quality models, and providing technical guidance on process selection and parameterization within Deltares Delft3D-WAQ and MIKE ECO Lab.

The specialist will contribute to environmental impact assessments, coastal and marine infrastructure projects, and water quality management studies while ensuring that modelling approaches are scientifically sound and compliant with applicable environmental regulations and best international practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct water quality assessments by evaluating physical, chemical, and biological processes affecting aquatic environments.
  • Select appropriate water quality processes, substances, and model parameters based on project objectives and environmental conditions.
  • Define and justify waterbodies and surroundings environmental parameter's, ambient water and air characteristics, including governing values, reaction rates, decay coefficients, nutrient cycling, dissolved oxygen dynamics, eutrophication processes, and other relevant water quality processes.
  • Analyze field and laboratory water quality data to support model development and calibration.
  • Interpret modelling results and provide technical recommendations for environmental management and engineering design.
  • Prepare technical reports, modelling documentation, and presentation materials for clients and regulatory authorities.
  • Ensure compliance with local environmental regulations and international standards.
  • Support multidisciplinary teams on marine, coastal, river, estuarine, and wastewater-related projects.
  • Review and assess environmental monitoring programs and water quality datasets.
  • Provide technical mentoring and training to project teams on water quality modelling concepts, process selection, parameterization, and interpretation of results.
  • Develop practical case studies and guidance documents to enhance organizational capability in water quality modelling.
  • Provide technical support during project implementation and proposal development.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, Marine Science, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Oceanography, Hydrology, or related discipline.
  • Master's or PhD in Water Quality Modelling, Environmental Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 5–10 years of relevant professional experience in environmental and water quality modelling.
  • Experience in marine, coastal, estuarine, river, outfalls, diffusers, desalination, water treatment, or wastewater modelling projects.
  • Strong understanding of hydrodynamics, water chemistry, nutrient cycling, dissolved oxygen processes, eutrophication, sediment-water interactions, and contaminant transport.
  • Experience in model validation, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty assessment.
  • Familiarity with environmental regulations and international guidelines related to water quality.

Technical Skills

  • Strong analytical and quantitative problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in processing and analyzing environmental datasets.
  • Experience in preparing high-quality technical reports and client deliverables.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Preferred Experience

  • Coastal and marine environmental impact assessments.
  • Advanced knowledge of Deltares Delft3D-WAQ and/or MIKE ECO Lab. Including Development, calibration, validation, and interpret numerical water quality models using Deltares Delft3D-WAQ and/or MIKE ECO Lab.
  • Port, marina, dredging, and reclamation projects.
  • Mixing zone and outfall assessments.
  • Environmental monitoring and compliance programs.
  • Training or mentoring technical staff in water quality modelling.
