We are seeking a hands-on Cloud Platform Migration Engineer to support a customer migration from Platform9/OpenStack-managed infrastructure into Spectro Cloud Palette-managed Kubernetes environments. This contract role is operationally focused and requires strong discipline when performing customer-impacting migration activities, destructive actions, and validation steps across compute, storage, networking, Kubernetes, and observability systems.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working directly in production-like environments, using OpenStack CLI workflows, Linux administration practices, Git-based change control, and Palette cluster provisioning processes to execute repeatable migration runbooks safely and accurately.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform hands-on Platform9/OpenStack operations across compute, Cinder volumes, Heat stacks, host aggregates, and Ironic/bare-metal workflows.
- Use OpenStack CLI workflows, RC files, cloud environment configuration, and shell-based procedures to inspect, validate, and modify infrastructure state.
- Support Spectro Cloud Palette cluster provisioning, cluster lifecycle actions, and post-provisioning health verification.
- Execute migration tasks involving VMs, stacks, storage, and associated cleanup, including Cinder volume unmanage operations and VM/stack teardown when approved.
- Validate Kubernetes cluster health and core Kubernetes resources using standard CLI tools and operational checks.
- Coordinate network-related migration steps, including VLAN awareness, DHCP boot-file changes, DNS and ping validation, and Meraki-assisted network checks.
- Review SignalFX dashboards, Splunk Cloud logs, and operational telemetry to confirm system health before, during, and after migration windows.
- Follow formal change-control practices, including branch and PR updates, step sequencing, peer review, and safeguards around destructive actions.
- Maintain clear operational notes, evidence of validation, and runbook updates for customer and internal stakeholders.
What we need to see from youRequired Skills and Experience
- Hands-on experience administering Platform9 and/or OpenStack environments, including compute, Cinder, Heat, aggregates, and bare-metal/Ironic concepts.
- Proficiency with OpenStack CLI commands, authentication/environment variables, project/tenant context, and repeatable CLI-driven operations.
- Strong Linux administration experience, including SSH, root-level operations, shell scripting, file editing, service inspection, and environment variable management.
- Experience with VM and storage migration workflows, including volume lifecycle handling, unmanage procedures, infrastructure cleanup, and rollback-aware execution.
- Working knowledge of Kubernetes fundamentals, including nodes, pods, namespaces, storage, networking, and basic cluster health troubleshooting.
- Experience provisioning or operating Kubernetes clusters through Spectro Cloud Palette or a comparable Kubernetes management platform.
- Networking fundamentals, including VLANs, DHCP/PXE boot behavior, DNS resolution, routing reachability, ping/ICMP validation, and network-device coordination.
- Experience using monitoring and logging platforms such as SignalFX and Splunk Cloud to validate health, identify errors, and support incident investigation.
- Strong change-management discipline with the ability to follow runbooks, update branches/PRs, document approvals, and pause before destructive actions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior Spectro Cloud Palette experience, including cluster profiles, cluster provisioning, and lifecycle operations.
- Experience participating in customer-facing migration windows or professional services delivery engagements.
- Familiarity with GitOps, GitHub/GitLab workflows, pull requests, and infrastructure-as-code operating models.
- Kubernetes certification or comparable hands-on experience, such as CKA, CKAD, CKS, or production cluster operations.
- Experience with data-center, bare-metal, PXE/Ironic, or private-cloud modernization projects.
