This role is for a highly skilled Civil Engineer who combines technical expertise in design and drafting with valuable experience in museum or cultural facilities projects. The engineer must possess strong 2D drawing capacity and proven cost estimation capabilities.
Responsibilities
The Civil Engineer will be responsible for technical design, drawing production, and financial planning for projects related to museum buildings, grounds, and infrastructure.
- Design and Drafting (2D Capacity):
- Produce, revise, and interpret detailed 2D technical drawings, plans, and specifications for museum-related civil works, including:
- Site development (parking, walkways, accessibility features).
- Utilities and drainage systems (sewer, water, stormwater management).
- Foundation layouts and structural support coordination for sensitive exhibits or structures.
- Utilize CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD) proficiently to ensure precision and compliance with project standards.
- Coordinate drawings with architectural, structural, and exhibit design teams, recognizing the unique conservation and aesthetic requirements of cultural spaces.
- Cost Estimation and Financial Planning:
- Prepare accurate and comprehensive cost estimates (including materials, labor, and equipment) at various project stages (conceptual, schematic, and detailed design).
- Conduct quantity take-offs directly from 2D drawings.
- Assist in the preparation of bid documents and support value engineering processes to maintain project budgets.
- Track and monitor project costs against the approved budget.
- Project Management and Compliance: Ensure all designs and construction practices comply with local, state, and federal building codes, ADA standards, and safety regulations.
- Conduct site investigations, surveys, and construction phase support, addressing civil engineering issues that arise.
- Document all design decisions, cost variances, and drawing revisions meticulously.
Qualifications
- Education: A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field.
- Experience: Proven professional experience as a Civil Engineer.
- Specific, demonstrable experience working on projects within museums, galleries, historical landmarks, or cultural institutions.
- Technical Skills: High proficiency in 2D CAD drafting (e.g., AutoCAD).
- Demonstrated capability in performing and presenting detailed cost estimation for civil works.
- Strong understanding of civil engineering disciplines (site grading, drainage, stormwater management).
- Other Requirements: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Preferred Qualifications (Optional)
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure.
- Experience with specialized museum requirements, such as vibration isolation, environmental control coordination, or working on historical structures.
- Familiarity with project scheduling software and industry-standard estimation tools.
- 3D and graphics work is a plus.
