Civil Engineer II

Job Summary

Hennessey Engineers is actively seeking a creative and talented Civil Engineer II for employment in our Southgate, MI, office. The Civil Engineer II – Municipal Engineering is a mid-level engineering position responsible for the design and production of municipal infrastructure projects. This role emphasizes hands-on technical design, preparation of construction documents, and advanced CAD production using Civil 3D or comparable platforms.

The ideal candidate possesses solid municipal engineering experience, strong technical design skills, and the ability to work independently while supporting project managers in delivering high-quality, constructible plans.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Design & Engineering

  • Perform engineering design for municipal infrastructure projects, including:
    • Roadways and local streets
    • Water distribution systems
    • Sanitary sewer systems
    • Stormwater management and drainage systems
    • Utility coordination and site development
  • Prepare engineering calculations, quantity takeoffs, and cost estimates.
  • Develop grading plans, profiles, cross-sections, and utility layouts.
  • Assist with hydraulic and hydrologic analyses.
  • Ensure designs comply with local, state, and federal standards.
CAD Production & Documentation

  • Develop and produce construction drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D (or equivalent).
  • Create alignments, profiles, corridors, pipe networks, and grading surfaces.
  • Maintain drawing organization consistent with company CAD standards.
  • Perform plan revisions based on internal QA/QC reviews.
  • Coordinate with survey data, GIS data, and field information for accurate plan development.

Project Support

  • Support Project Managers with scheduling, budgeting, and technical coordination.
  • Participate in client meetings and technical discussions.
  • Assist with permit applications and regulatory submittals.
  • Respond to contractor RFIs and assist with construction-phase services when required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • 4–8 years of experience in municipal engineering design.
  • Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T.) certification required; P.E. preferred or ability to obtain licensure.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Working knowledge of municipal design standards and specifications.
  • Experience preparing construction plans and technical documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with municipal clients or public agencies.
  • Familiarity with state transportation standards.
  • Experience coordinating with survey crews and reviewing topographic data.
