Job Description

Job Title: CAD Engineer – Wiring Harness Design

Job Description

This role focuses on designing and optimizing automotive wiring harnesses using CATIA V5/V6 and 3DEXPERIENCE, with a strong emphasis on packaging, electromagnetic compatibility, and cost-effective solutions. You will collaborate closely with electrical and electronics systems engineers to develop robust harness concepts, conduct benchmarking and packaging studies, and ensure manufacturability, serviceability, and compliance with engineering standards. The position suits a proactive CAD professional who takes ownership of complex design challenges and consistently delivers high-quality results.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop automotive wiring harnesses using CATIA V5/V6 and 3DEXPERIENCE, including electrical harness design, part modelling, and surface design.
  • Define optimized harness architectures and routing strategies that minimize weight and cost while meeting Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with Electrical & Electronics Systems Engineering (EESE) teams to develop concepts, design proposals, and integrated vehicle solutions.
  • Independently plan and conduct technical design reviews, clearly articulating harness design challenges and proposed solutions to engineers, suppliers, and stakeholders.
  • Perform benchmarking studies on electrical and electronic modules and systems to compare designs, technologies, and packaging approaches.
  • Conduct packaging studies for electrical and electronic modules and systems, determining their optimal locations within the vehicle.
  • Independently design attachment schemes and brackets to mount electrical modules and systems, ensuring structural integrity and serviceability.
  • Apply knowledge of vehicle architecture, aggregate groups, sub-groups, systems, and sub-systems to integrate wiring harnesses effectively into the overall vehicle design.
  • Evaluate and confirm manufacturing feasibility of harness designs, ensuring they can be produced efficiently and reliably.
  • Assess assembly feasibility to ensure that harnesses and related components can be installed smoothly during vehicle build.
  • Review service feasibility to ensure harness layouts and component placements support maintenance, repair, and replacement activities.
  • Use Teamcenter Engineering and Vismockup tools to manage product data, visualize designs, and validate packaging and integration.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with program stakeholders and suppliers to resolve design issues and align on technical requirements.
  • Work both independently and as part of a team, taking ownership of tasks and driving them to completion within agreed timelines.
  • Maintain a strong focus on quality, proactively identifying potential design risks and implementing robust solutions.

Essential Skills

  • 4 to 8 years of hands-on experience in automotive wiring harness design and packaging of electrical and electronic components.
  • Extensive working experience in CATIA V5 and 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX), specifically in Electrical Harness Design, Part Modelling, and Surface Design.
  • Strong expertise in wiring harness routing and resolving complex interface challenges using CATIA V5/V6 and 3DEXPERIENCE platforms.
  • Proven ability to define optimized harness architectures and routing strategies that minimize weight and cost while meeting EMC requirements.
  • Experience performing benchmarking and packaging studies for electrical and electronic modules and systems, including defining their locations in the vehicle.
  • Capability to independently design attachment schemes and brackets for mounting electrical modules and systems.
  • Solid knowledge of vehicle architecture, vehicle aggregate groups, sub-groups, systems, and sub-systems.
  • Proficiency in evaluating manufacturing feasibility, assembly feasibility, and service feasibility for harness and component designs.
  • Good knowledge and practical experience with Teamcenter Engineering and Vismockup tools.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively engage with program stakeholders and suppliers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proactive, self-starting approach with a strong sense of ownership and commitment to high-quality results.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with Electrical Distribution Systems (EDS) and automotive electrical architectures.
  • Hands-on exposure to electrical distribution system design processes and standards.
  • Familiarity with integrating electrical and electronic modules within complex vehicle platforms.
  • Ability to present design concepts and review outcomes clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on practical, production-ready design solutions.

Work Environment

You will work in a collaborative engineering environment that emphasizes close interaction with Electrical & Electronics Systems Engineering teams, suppliers, and internal stakeholders. The role involves extensive use of CATIA V5/V6, 3DEXPERIENCE (3DX), Teamcenter Engineering, and Vismockup for daily design, packaging, and data management activities. The position typically follows standard full-time engineering hours, with flexibility required to support design reviews and project milestones. The work setting encourages proactive communication, independent decision-making, and teamwork, with a strong focus on delivering robust, manufacturable, and serviceable wiring harness solutions for automotive applications.
