Job Title: BIW Fixture Design Engineer
Job Description
This role focuses on designing and validating Body-in-White (BIW) fixtures, ensuring that all tools and units meet process, manufacturing, and payload requirements. You will work across concept, 3D finish, and 2D design stages, including complex dump and slide units, to support robust and efficient BIW manufacturing.
Responsibilities
- Understand BIW process information and interpret it to define appropriate fixture concepts and tool functionality for all types of tools.
- Analyze overall tool functionality to ensure fixtures support BIW processes, quality, and productivity requirements.
- Perform input checks for concept and 3D finish designs, validating completeness, correctness, and alignment with process specifications.
- Develop fixture concepts, including complex dump and slide units, based on BIW process needs and manufacturing constraints.
- Create and refine 3D finish models of BIW fixtures and units, ensuring accuracy, manufacturability, and compliance with standards.
- Prepare detailed 2D drawings for units and tools, including dimensions, tolerances, and necessary annotations for manufacturing.
- Incorporate knowledge of manufacturing processes into fixture design to ensure feasible, cost-effective, and reliable production.
- Validate the selection and application of standard parts in fixtures to ensure compatibility, availability, and adherence to standards.
- Conduct payload validation for fixtures to confirm they can safely and reliably support required loads and operating conditions.
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to review designs, address feedback, and implement design improvements throughout the project lifecycle.
Essential Skills
- Strong understanding of BIW process information and its application to fixture and tool design.
- Ability to analyze and define overall tool functionality for various types of BIW tools and fixtures.
- Experience performing input checks and reviews for concept and 3D finish designs.
- Proficiency in concept design, 3D finish, and 2D detailing of BIW fixture units and tools, including complex dump and slide units.
- Awareness of and ability to apply manufacturing processes in fixture design.
- Competence in validating standard parts usage within BIW fixtures.
- Experience in payload validation to ensure fixtures meet load and performance requirements.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Background in BIW fixture design, including exposure to concept, 3D finish, and 2D documentation.
- Familiarity with manufacturing standards and best practices related to fixture design.
- Ability to interpret engineering data, specifications, and process information to guide design decisions.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in both 3D models and 2D drawings.
- Effective communication skills for collaborating with design, process, and manufacturing teams.
Work Environment
You will work in an engineering and design-focused environment that emphasizes precision, manufacturability, and adherence to BIW standards. The role involves extensive work with 3D and 2D design tools to develop and refine fixture concepts and final designs, including complex dump and slide units. Collaboration with process and manufacturing teams is integral to ensure that fixtures are practical, robust, and aligned with production requirements. The position typically follows standard office and engineering working hours, with periods of focused design work and design reviews. The environment promotes structured documentation and clear communication to support efficient BIW manufacturing.
