The Opportunity
You will be a part of the Energy Storage & Automation Engineering team and support the engineering, design, development, testing, and commissioning of SCADA systems for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Automation projects. Your work will primarily involve developing SCADA architecture, HMI/graphical screens, communication interfaces, databases, and remote monitoring solutions using industry-standard tools such as Ignition SCADA, MicroSCADA, and PostgreSQL.
You will be an individual contributor responsible for delivering engineering activities based on project requirements while coordinating closely with cross-functional teams including Control & Protection, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Project Management, and Commissioning teams. In the absence of your Lead Engineer, you may be required to interact directly with customers, vendors, and other stakeholders to resolve technical queries and ensure successful project execution.
The role offers the opportunity to work on advanced energy automation solutions, integrating Battery Management Systems (BMS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), Inverters, Protection IEDs, PLCs, RTUs, and cloud-based monitoring applications for utility-scale projects.
How You'll Make An Impact
- Design and develop SCADA systems for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) automation applications.
- Develop and configure HMI/SCADA screens, dashboards, alarm management, trends, and reporting solutions using Ignition SCADA, MicroSCADA, and Zenon SCADA platforms.
- Configure and maintain PostgreSQL databases for historian data, alarm logs, event management, and operational reporting.
- Implement communication protocols such as Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, OPC UA, DNP3, IEC 61850, MQTT, and REST APIs.
- Design and configure web-based SCADA solutions enabling secure remote monitoring and control.
- Perform SCADA system integration, Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and commissioning support activities.
- Configure alarms, trends, reports, historian functions, user management, and cybersecurity settings.
- Troubleshoot communication issues, SCADA performance problems, and field device integration challenges.
- Prepare technical documentation including system design documents, configuration manuals, testing procedures, and user guides.
- Collaborate effectively with Electrical Engineering, Control Software Development, Cybersecurity, Project Management, and Commissioning teams.
- Coordinate with customers, vendors, and project stakeholders during project execution.
- Adhere to applicable codes, practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards, and specifications.
- Responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable external and internal regulations, procedures, and guidelines.
- Live Hitachi Energy's core values of safety and integrity by taking responsibility for your actions while caring for your colleagues and the business.
Your Background
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Must have 5-10 years of experience in SCADA system design, development, integration, testing, and commissioning.
- Experience in utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Solar Plants, Substations, Power Systems, or Industrial Automation applications.
- Strong experience with Ignition SCADA, MicroSCADA, Zenon, Siemens WinCC, or equivalent SCADA platforms.
- Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and other SQL databases for SCADA historian and reporting applications.
- Good understanding of Battery Management Systems (BMS), Energy Management Systems (EMS), Inverters, and power conversion systems.
- Experience with industrial communication protocols including Modbus TCP/IP, Modbus RTU, OPC UA, DNP3, IEC 61850, MQTT, and REST APIs.
- Knowledge of web technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern HMI development frameworks is an added advantage.
- Familiarity with SCADA cybersecurity, secure communication practices, encryption, and authentication mechanisms.
- Understanding of applicable standards such as IEC, IEEE, ANSI, ISO, and utility communication standards.
- Experience in FAT, SAT, commissioning, troubleshooting, and performance optimization of SCADA systems.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a global engineering environment.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
