Title: AWS Platform Owner - Engineering Manager
Department: Enterprise Technology Services
Location: Global
Reports To: Head of Cloud Hosting Platforms (AWS, Azure, Kubernetes Product Owner)
Level: 6
About Us
We share a commitment to making things better for clients and each other. We continually explore new technologies and new ways of working to put our clients first. Bring your boldest ideas to our Cloud Engineering organisation and help shape the future of how engineering teams build and operate on AWS across the enterprise.
You will lead the AWS Platform Engineering team, responsible for designing, building and operating the organisation's core AWS cloud platform that underpins application delivery, data services and digital products globally.
The AWS platform provides secure, compliant-by-default, self-service cloud capabilities, enabling engineering teams to provision and operate workloads efficiently at scale. The team works across regions, follows modern platform engineering and DevOps practices, and partners closely with security, architecture, application development, and enablement teams.
As the platform matures, the focus continues to evolve from foundational cloud services to higher-level abstractions, standard patterns, automation, and guardrails that improve developer experience while maintaining strong governance and cost control.
As AWS Platform Owner, you will play a central role in shaping and evolving the organisation's AWS cloud platform strategy and execution. The platform you own is foundational to how teams build, deploy and operate applications, and your decisions will directly impact developer productivity, security posture, scalability, resilience, and cloud cost efficiency.
You will be accountable for the product vision, roadmap, and outcomes of the AWS platform, balancing customer needs, security and compliance requirements, and commercial considerations. You will lead a globally distributed engineering team, support their development and providing clear technical direction.
This role requires close collaboration with application teams, product owners, security, risk, data, and enterprise architecture. You will act as a key contributor to architecture reviews and governance forums, ensuring AWS usage aligns with enterprise standards while remaining pragmatic and delivery focused.
You will operate as a peer within the Cloud Engineering leadership group, partnering closely with Azure and Kubernetes platform owners, and helping to set a coherent multi-cloud strategy across the organisation.
You have strong AWS experience, deep Cloud Networking understanding, detailed hold on Cloud Security constructs, and a solid software engineering background. You can lead technical direction, making architectural decisions that balance competing concerns to fit the context, and you are willing to challenge approaches when needed.
You have experience managing and developing engineers and shape team culture by leading through example. You build teams that take ownership of their systems, and take pride in delivering secure, resilient and reliable services as standard practice. As the platform grows in scope and complexity, you help engineers develop the judgment and confidence needed to support it.
Key Responsibilities
Act as the accountable owner for delivering a secure, resilient, automated, and commercially viable AWS platform.
Define, own, and continuously evolve the AWS platform product vision and roadmap, informed by developer feedback, usage metrics, operational data, and business priorities.
Enable self-service AWS capabilities through standardized patterns, infrastructure-as-code, and reusable platform services.
Ensure AWS environments are secure and compliant by default, embedding policy-as-code, guardrails, and automated controls.
Build strong relationships with engineering, product, and infrastructure teams, helping consumers understand and adopt the platform effectively.
Review, challenge, and guide application and platform architectures to ensure they are scalable, secure, resilient, and cost-aware.
Contribute directly through design reviews, technical deep dives, and escalation support to maintain high engineering standards.
Lead and develop a global platform engineering team, fostering ownership, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence.
Promote modern cloud engineering and DevOps practices, driving automation, reliability, and reduced time-to-market.
Advocate for platform-driven approaches within delivery teams, influencing adoption and raising AWS engineering maturity across the organisation.
Partner with security, finance, and leadership stakeholders to ensure effective cloud cost management (FinOps) and risk management.
Experience and Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have
Deep hands-on experience designing and operating cloud platforms on AWS.
Strong knowledge of core AWS services (e.g. networking, compute, storage, IAM, security, monitoring).
A solid software engineering background with experience building and operating production systems.
Experienced in Python as programming language.
Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK).
Experience designing and operating CI/CD pipelines for cloud environments.
Proven experience leading and developing software or platform engineering teams.
Confidence owning a platform or product and engaging directly with internal customers.
Experience operating at scale with a focus on reliability, security, and automation.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly.
What sets you apart from the crowd
Experience building or owning an internal AWS landing zone or enterprise AWS platform.
Strong understanding of AWS security architecture, including identity, network security, and shared responsibility models.
Experience embedding governance and compliance through automation and policy-as-code.
Practical experience with cost optimisation and FinOps practices.
Familiarity with cloud-native and container-based workloads (e.g. EKS), even if not the primary focus.
Experience working in or leading globally distributed engineering teams.
A visible passion for cloud technology and continuous learning.
