Associate Professor of Psychiatry: Job Description

An Associate Professor of Psychiatry is a mid-to-senior level faculty position that bridges the gap between clinical execution and departmental leadership. At this stage, the professional is expected to demonstrate high-level clinical expertise in mental health while taking on significant responsibilities in postgraduate training and institutional research.

Core Responsibilities

  • Clinical Excellence & Mental Health Services
  • Specialized Consultation: Manage complex psychiatric cases, including treatment-resistant depression, bipolar disorders, and refractory schizophrenia.
  • Specialty Clinics: Lead specialized units such as Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, or De-addiction/Substance Abuse centers.
  • Emergency Intervention: Oversee the management of psychiatric emergencies, such as acute psychosis, suicidal ideation, and violent behavior.
  • Psychotherapy Oversight: Supervise the delivery of evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and family counseling.
  • Advanced Academic Instruction
  • PG Residency Training: Serve as a core mentor for MD (Psychiatry) residents, conducting seminars, journal clubs, and case conferences.
  • Undergraduate Curriculum: Deliver advanced lectures on behavioral sciences, psychopharmacology, and forensic psychiatry to MBBS students.
  • Assessment & Evaluation: Design and implement internal assessment tools and act as an examiner for university-level professional exams.
  • Research & Scholarly Activity
  • Independent Research: Design and lead original clinical research projects or community mental health surveys.
  • Publication Leadership: Maintain a steady output of research papers in indexed journals, often serving as a corresponding author or mentor to junior faculty.
  • Ethics & Compliance: Ensure all departmental research adheres to the Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC) guidelines and international standards for human subject research.
  • Administrative & Professional Support
  • Inter-departmental Liaison: Provide psychiatric consultation-liaison services to other departments (e.g., Medicine, Surgery, OB-GYN) for psychosomatic issues.
  • Departmental Management: Assist the Professor/HOD in administrative tasks, faculty scheduling, and preparing for regulatory inspections (NMC/DCI).

Required Qualifications & Experience

CriteriaSpecification (NMC/Standard Norms)Academic DegreeMD in Psychiatry or DNB in Psychiatry from a recognized medical institution. Experience Typically requires 5-7 years of total teaching experience, with at least 4 years as an Assistant Professor.
