Introduction
We seek a talented, highly motivated Associate Director to be a part of our India team. The candidate should be motivated to help the world's premier companies understand India and its policy environment, find alignment with key stakeholders, and help India grow by considering the ideas and capabilities of top-tier firms in the market.
The candidate should bring deep familiarity with India's policy and regulatory landscape, combined with commercial acumen, communication, instincts, and relationships to navigate it effectively on behalf of clients, and the seniority and skills to lead both client engagements and high-level stakeholder relationships.
A keen understanding of India's policy, political, and stakeholder environment and its global context, combined with the ability to navigate it on behalf of clients, is essential. Skills and responsibilities required are of a high degree of management and leadership.
Position Responsibilities
Client Services and Stakeholder Engagement
- Manage a portfolio of clients with a focus on the India market and oversee the end-to-end delivery on key public policy, regulatory, and legislative issues. Maintain a detailed understanding of each client work stream and the accompanying scope of work.
- Lead client advocacy by building and leveraging relationships across government ministries, regulatory bodies, industry associations, media, civil society, and thought leadership communities.
- Supervise the work of BGA India team members to ensure a uniform, high-quality, and timely presentation of deliverables that meet the demanding needs of BGA clients, including in-person briefings, written products, presentations, conference calls, and other formats.
- Develop an understanding of the India-focused initiatives of clients, and the challenges they face in the Indian policy environment in relation to their business.
Business Development
- Lead in growing the India practice by identifying and pursuing new client opportunities across priority sectors, and deepening relationships with existing clients to expand scope and engagement.
- Build and maintain a professional network of senior corporate government affairs executives, industry leaders, and institutional stakeholders that generates business development opportunities for BGA.
- Represent BGA India at high-profile industry events, conferences, and forums by actively projecting the firm's expertise, relationships, and market leadership.
- Monitor government policies, legislative and regulatory developments, industry trends, media coverage, and business and investment opportunities.
Team Management and Thought Leadership
- Provide leadership and mentoring to the BGA India team members. Set goals and standards for team members. Evaluate organizational structure and capacity needs to optimize workload and resource allocation.
- Develop and nurture talent by providing constructive guidance, editing, and leading by example.
- Seek and initiate opportunities to raise BGA's profile in India, to find opportunities to attend relevant events, and to demonstrate market leadership and value publicly, and to select audiences.
- Work collaboratively with BGA teams and partners based in Asia, the Pacific, North America, and Europe on a range of projects and provide further support internally and externally to advance BGA objectives.
Research, Writing, and Delivery
- Frame, provide, and solicit input and conduct final check for client deliverables, including stakeholder maps, engagement strategies, monthly monitoring matrices, etc.
- Support content and editing to research products, including news flashes, client memos, the BGA topical updates, and the half-yearly Forecast, etc.
- Guide the monitoring, analysis, and reporting on key public policy issues, regulatory and legislative developments, and brief client executives on major developments.
- Keep abreast of news relevant to clients and provide top-line analysis of current events and how developments affect clients business operations, and update on MS Teams and other platforms.
- Work with minimal guidance and supervision in a high-pressure environment with multiple work streams while meeting deadlines.
- Other duties as required.
Job Requirements
- Experience - minimum 10 years in government affairs, public policy, or regulatory advisory experience, or 12+ years in a senior industry role with direct policy exposure. Demonstrated experience managing teams and client relationships is strongly preferred.
- Expertise - deep, current knowledge of India's policy and regulatory landscape across one or more priority sectors, including technology, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, energy, financial services, or advanced manufacturing.
- Communication - outstanding written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to produce and oversee the production of clear, precise, and analytically rigorous written work under tight deadlines.
- Stakeholder Engagement - proven ability to engage confidently and credibly with senior government officials, corporate executives, industry bodies, and media, including in high-stakes briefings and public forums.
- Commercial Instinct - track record of generating and converting business development opportunities, and of deepening client relationships over time through consistently excellent delivery.
- Tools - proficiency in MS 365 (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams); familiarity with Salesforce or equivalent CRM is a plus. Comfort adopting new technology tools and platforms.
- Education - minimum bachelor's degree in law, economics, political science, business, journalism, or a related field is required. A master's degree or equivalent professional qualification is an advantage.
