We are seeking a Technical Director for our Strategic Transport Modelling Service Line within Communities and Mobility
- Oversee the delivery of strategic transport modelling projects in the UK and Ireland
- Join the senior team to work with the Service Line Director and Technical Directors to deliver the business plan for 140 colleagues
- Work with the Strategic Modelling Discipline Team Leader to allow the team leader to resource and develop and grow the team
- Provide support to the wider WSP including the Transport Planning team, Environment teams and Infrastructure teams
- Actively encouraging technical and professional development within the Strategic Modelling team
- Support work winning activities for key national, regional and local authority clients
- promote best proactive and raise WSP's profile in the market
Responsibilities:
- Project Delivery: Lead and support the delivery of a diverse portfolio of transport planning projects, including transport strategies, Local Plans, business cases, scheme appraisals, transport assessments, and feasibility studies, in line with UK guidance and client requirements.
- Technical Oversight: Provide subject matter expertise in transport planning policy, scheme appraisal and technical analysis.
- Quality Assurance: Oversee and review deliverables from junior staff, ensuring alignment with project objectives, technical standards, and client expectations.
- Design & Appraisal: Take a lead in the development, appraisal, and evaluation of transport schemes in line with relevant national and local policy and design guidance.
- Collaboration & Communication: Act as a key point of contact between the UK and India teams, helping to manage workflows, monitor progress, and communicate expectations. Also collaborating with our Future Mobility, Digital, Mobility Data Analytics and Net Zero teams on Future Ready initiatives like Mobility Hubs, EV strategies and First/Last Mile Studies.
- Delegation & Task Management: Effectively manage and check delegated tasks, providing structured feedback and ensuring timely delivery to agreed standards.
- Mentorship & Upskilling: Play a proactive role in the professional development of junior colleagues, offering technical guidance, coaching, and day-to-day support to help them build core transport planning competencies.
- Resourcing & Risk Management: Working closely with the leadership team in India and UK to assist with resource planning, flagging utilisation or capacity issues, and helping to identify and manage project risks.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, working collaboratively across disciplines and locations.
- Business Development: Contribute to funding bids, feasibility studies, and strategic reports that promote sustainable and active travel.
- Sustainability: Leading by example in embedding sustainability principles throughout project delivery and support the company's broader sustainability goals.
- Reporting & Continuous Improvement: Support the reporting of project progress and output quality, and contribute to business improvement initiatives within the team.
- Mandatory skills
- Experience in managing a range of small, medium and/ or large sized transport planning projects, with responsibility for project team management, collaboration, budgeting, programming and technical excellence.
- Experience in delivering transport planning projects in some or all of the following: scheme development (active travel, public transport and highways-based solutions), business case development, transport strategies and appraisal and development planning.
- Excellent report writing and strong analytical skills.
- Experience in taking a lead in technical proposals
- Experience in MS Office tools and GIS packages
- Experience in supporting and mentoring staff.
- Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.

- The ability to work effectively at both strategic and detailed levels, with up-to-date knowledge transport policies and legislations, national and local authority design standards (DMRB, Manual for Streets, Active Travel Act Guidance) and planning processes applicable to the UK.
- Ability to produce technical project and non-technical public reports and presentations for a range of clients and stakeholders to a high technical standard.
- Familiarity with strategic and microsimulation models would be advantageous.
- Paper presented at / published in recognised national / internal journal(s)/ conference(s) will be highly desirable.
- Qualifications
- M. Tech/ M. Plan in related subject such as civil engineering, transport engineering or transport planning.
- Member or working towards associated Professional body membership.
