Job Overview

The Assistant Professor of Commerce is an entry-level faculty position responsible for delivering high-quality instruction to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Beyond the classroom, the role involves conducting original research, mentoring students, and contributing to the department's administrative and developmental goals. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between academic theory and practical business applications.

Key Responsibilities

1. Teaching & Pedagogy

  • Course Delivery: Conduct lectures and seminars in core commerce subjects (e.g., Financial Accounting, Business Law, Taxation, Auditing, Marketing, or International Business).
  • Curriculum Development: Design and update syllabi to reflect current industry trends and regulatory changes (such as new tax laws or accounting standards).
  • Assessment: Create, administer, and grade examinations, assignments, and practical projects to evaluate student progress.
  • Digital Integration: Utilize Learning Management Systems (LMS) and digital tools to enhance the learning experience.

2. Research & Scholarship

  • Publications: Conduct independent research and publish findings in peer-reviewed, high-impact academic journals.
  • Grant Writing: Develop proposals to secure research funding from government or private agencies.
  • Conferences: Present research papers at national and international conferences to represent the institution.

3. Student Mentorship & Support

  • Academic Advising: Guide students on course selection, career pathways, and professional certifications (like CA, CS, or CMA).
  • Research Supervision: Oversee student dissertations and final-year projects.
  • Office Hours: Maintain regular availability to assist students with complex subject matter and personal academic growth.

4. Administrative & Departmental Service

  • Committees: Serve on departmental or university-level committees (e.g., Admissions, Examination, or Placement cells).
  • Events: Assist in organizing workshops, guest lectures, and industry industrial visits.
  • Accreditation: Provide documentation and support for institutional accreditation processes (such as NAAC or AACSB).

Required Qualifications & Skills

Education & Eligibility

  • Master's Degree: M.Com or equivalent in a relevant field with a minimum of 55% marks.
  • Eligibility Exams: Cleared UGC-NET or SLET/SET (mandatory in many regions for entry-level positions).
  • Doctorate: A Ph.D. in Commerce or a related specialization is highly preferred and often mandatory for career advancement to Associate Professor.

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Tally, SAP) and statistical tools (e.g., SPSS, R, or Excel for Data Analysis).
  • Strong understanding of modern financial reporting and business analytics.

Soft Skills

  • Public Speaking: Ability to engage large audiences and simplify complex financial concepts.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to learn new teaching methodologies and industry software.
