Position Summary
The MIT Institute of Design is seeking a creative and academically driven Assistant Professor for the Interior Space and Furniture Design department. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary industrial needs, fostering an environment of innovation, sustainability, and technical excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Curriculum Delivery: Deliver high-quality lectures and studio-based instruction in Interior Design, Furniture Construction, and Space Planning.
- Mentorship: Guide students through design projects, from conceptualization and prototyping to final execution.
- Research & Practice: Contribute to the department's research output or engage in professional design practice that elevates the institute's profile.
- Industry Integration: Leverage industry experience to facilitate workshops, site visits, and internship opportunities for students.
- Handicraft Integration: Incorporate knowledge of Indian handicrafts into the curriculum to promote indigenous design techniques and sustainable practices.
Qualifications & Experience
Educational Background
- M.Des / M.Arch from a reputed national or international institute (e.g., NID, CEPT, MITID, or equivalent).
- Candidates with a B.Des in Furniture Design may be considered if they possess significant, high-level industry experience.
- M.Arch or M.E. (Mechanical/Production) candidates will be considered provided they have a proven portfolio in Furniture Design.
Professional Experience
- Total Experience: A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in the field of Interior Design or Furniture Design.
- Industry Tenure: At least 3 years of active work within the design industry.
- Specialized Knowledge: Candidates who have worked extensively in the field of Indian Handicrafts are highly encouraged to apply.
- Teaching: Prior experience in academia or conducting design workshops is preferred but not mandatory for those with stellar industry backgrounds.
Core Competencies
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced knowledge of materials (wood, metal, polymers), manufacturing processes, and Joinery.
- Software Skills: Proficiency in CAD, Rhino, SolidWorks, or Adobe Creative Suite.
- Design Thinking: Strong ability to teach the design processfrom user research to ergonomics and spatial storytelling.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and visual communication skills to effectively critique and inspire student work.
