The Linux Administrator (L2 & L3) is responsible for administration, troubleshooting, optimization, and engineering of enterprise Linux systems. The role involves deep OS-level expertise, automation, performance tuning, security hardening, and support of on-prem, virtualized, and cloud-based Linux environments.
Administer Linux servers running RHEL, CentOS, Oracle Linux, Ubuntu.
Perform OS-level troubleshooting for:
CPU, memory, disk I/O, file system, and process-related issues
Boot issues, service failures, kernel messages, and log analysis
Manage:
Users, groups, sudoers, PAM authentication
File systems (ext4, xfs), mounts, NFS
LVM (creation, extension, snapshots)
Handle package management using yum/dnf/apt/rpm.
Apply OS patching, kernel updates, and security fixes.
Manage system services using systemctl, chkconfig.
Configure and troubleshoot:
SSH, DNS, NTP, cron, rsyslog, logrotate
Perform backup and restore operations using enterprise backup tools.
Monitor systems using tools like Nagios, Zabbix, Prometheus.
Support virtualization platforms (VMware/KVM) at OS level.
Work on incidents, service requests, and problem tickets as per SLA.
Provide detailed logs and diagnostics for escalation to L3.
Architect, design, and optimize Linux infrastructure for performance, scalability, and availability.
Perform advanced troubleshooting including:
Kernel panics, memory leaks, hung processes
Performance bottlenecks and system crashes
Conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and implement permanent fixes.
Perform performance tuning for:
Kernel parameters (sysctl)
CPU scheduling, memory, I/O, networking
Implement security hardening:
SELinux, firewall rules, auditing, CIS benchmarks
Design and manage:
High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) solutions
Clustering and load-balancing setups
Develop automation using:
Bash / Shell scripting
Configuration management tools (Ansible, Puppet, Chef)
Support Linux systems on cloud platforms:
AWS / Azure / GCP
Work with containers and orchestration:
Docker, Kubernetes (preferred)
Manage OS-level compliance, vulnerability remediation, and audits.
Lead OS upgrades, migrations, and major change implementations.
Mentor L1/L2 teams and act as a technical escalation point.
Strong hands-on experience with Linux system internals
Advanced knowledge of:
Process management, memory management, file systems
Networking (TCP/IP, routing, DNS, firewalls)
Proficiency in shell scripting (Bash).
Experience with system monitoring and alerting tools.
Knowledge of backup, restore, and recovery procedures.
Understanding of ITIL-based incident and change management.
Linux kernel tuning and debugging
Automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC)
Cloud-native Linux administration
HA clustering and DR architecture
Container and DevOps toolchains Certifications (Preferred)
RHCSA / RHCE
