ROLE OVERVIEW

The Shishya Jigyasa Academy is a progressive Cambridge International school that believes deeply in creative expression, exploration, and discovery as the foundation of genuine learning. We are looking for a passionate, skilled, and imaginative Art & Design Teacher to work across Grades 510, nurturing visual thinking, artistic confidence, and design sensibility in our learners.

This is not just an art class it is a space for students to investigate the world through observation, experimentation, and personal expression. The ideal candidate brings both strong studio practice and the ability to connect art to the school's broader culture of curiosity and independent learning. The role lays the groundwork for students progressing toward the Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design syllabus (0400).

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Teaching & Learning

Teach Art & Design across Grades 510 through age-appropriate progression from foundational mark-making and colour theory to observational drawing, mixed media, and design thinking in middle school. Design lesson plans with clear learning outcomes that encourage personal response, experimentation, and skills development in two- and three-dimensional work. Introduce students to a broad range of media, materials, and techniques including drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture, textiles, and basic digital tools. Use first-hand observation as a primary starting point for creative work, as aligned with the Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design philosophy. Conduct formative and summative assessments; maintain portfolio records and accurate progress documentation for each student.

2. Artistic Development & Visual Literacy

  • Guide students in developing their own creative voice through structured yet open-ended projects.
  • Build visual literacy by exposing students to diverse artists, designers, art movements, and cultural traditions local, national, and global.
  • Encourage critical thinking and self-reflection as part of the creative process, teaching students to review, refine, and evaluate their own work. Introduce middle school & senior students to the design process: research, idea development, iteration, and resolution.
  • Lay a strong preparatory foundation for students moving into the IGCSE Art & Design course.
  • Support students in preparation of portfolios and guide them through projects in preparation for the board exam.

3. Studio Management & Classroom Environment

  • Maintain a well-organised, inspiring, and safe art studio that reflects the vibrancy and creativity of the school community.
  • Manage art materials, inventory, and resources responsibly and within allocated budgets.
  • Create a print-rich, display-rich environment celebrating student artwork and artistic influences.
  • Enforce safety protocols around materials, tools, and equipment.

4. Communication & Collaboration

  • Communicate student progress, artistic growth, and areas of development clearly with parents.
  • Collaborate with class teachers and subject coordinators for integrated, theme-based learning projects.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary planning sessions and weekly review meetings with senior management.

5. School Events & Responsibilities

  • Take a lead role in school events including Annual Day, Art Exhibitions, Cultural Celebrations, and Theme Weeks where visual art and design play a central part.
  • Coordinate student artwork for school displays, assemblies, and parent events.
  • Supervise students during field trips, break times, sports days, and outdoor learning activities.
  • Support and contribute to community art projects, murals, and campus beautification initiatives.

6. Professional Development

  • Attend all professional development programmes, workshops, and Saturday sessions as scheduled.
  • Stay current with developments in Cambridge Lower Secondary and IGCSE Art & Design frameworks.
  • Bring a reflective teaching practice and openness to evolving pedagogy in visual arts education.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENT

Mandatory

Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Visual Arts, or Applied Design 13 years of experience teaching Art at the primary , lower secondary and upper secondary levels.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with the Cambridge International curriculum, including the IGCSE Art & Design syllabus
  • Proficiency across multiple media drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage, and/or digital design
  • Experience building and managing student portfolios for assessment
  • Knowledge of Indian art traditions alongside global and contemporary art movements

Work Expectations

  • School hours: 7:50 am 4:00 pm
  • Willingness to stay back for events, exhibitions, and Saturday development workshops
  • Participation in Summer and Dussehra programmes as per the school calendar
