About the IIHS Campus Development

The IIHS campus is located on a 54-acre site at Kengeri, Bengaluru, situated between a 500-acre reserve forest and an 800-year-old 150-acre lake. Its digitally augmented buildings and facilities, slated to be built over multiple phases, will enable interdisciplinary teaching-learning, research and practice and demonstrate the best examples of Indian design and crafts. The campus will provide faculty, students, and researchers with the opportunity to immerse themselves in and innovate around India's core urban challenges.

The campus features a robust, integrated digital infrastructure and services network supported by various sensors and other IoT devices to enable cost-effective high performance and long-term sustainability. This will be enabled via an intelligent digital twin to integrate building and campus -wide services to assist in predictive operations and maintenance.

The IIHS Campus Development team focuses on the design, procurement, executionand documentation of the development of the IIHS Kengeri Campus. Joining the Campus Development team at IIHS offers a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of building one of India's most ambitious, sustainable and climate-resilient campuses. Situated in the upcoming areas of Kengeri Bengaluru, it is deeply rooted in principles of net neutrality and long-term environmental stewardship targeting Factor Two to Four infrastructure and services and ecological conservation. Job Description

IIHS is looking to hire an architect with a specialization in interior design with around 8 years of work experience, with a strong experiential-base in Indian crafts traditions and their integration with advanced ICT and manufacturing technology. This position will be part of the Campus Development team at IIHS based out of Kengeri, Bengaluru. The responsibilities for this role will involve supporting interior design planning and execution activities, including but not restricted to design development, detailed drawings, 3D models, site supervision, as-built drawings and analysis of various sustainability parameters. The work will also involve direct architectural intervention as per regular business practices, as well as research, publications, prototyping, and creation of policies, standards and guidelines.

This will be a contractual position for an initial term of 11 months, renewable on mutual consent.

Activities and Tasks

Responsibilities would include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Conducting market research on current practices, standards, and innovations in sustainable interior design, furniture and associated fittings and fixtures, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders;
  • Developing comprehensive interior design concepts, a ranging material palettes and lighting designs for academic , research and residential spaces;
  • Developing theme-based interior design for specialized spaces, drawing on a wide range of Indian craft traditions across materials such as wood, bamboo and rattan, terracotta and ceramics, stone, metals, and textiles from across the country;
  • Demonstrating design and execution experience in furniture using sustainable and upcycled materials through in-house production or in-sourced supply;
  • Preparing detailed design drawings for furniture, including joinery and hardware specifications; producing 3D models using SketchUp, Rhino, or Revit, along with renderings and scaled physical models to facilitate design communication and BIM coordination; expertise in BIM is highly valued;
  • Coordinating with the IIHS team and external stakeholders for both proposed and ongoing interior and furniture activities at the campus site, ensuring all deadlines, procedures and project requirements are met;
  • Collaborating with the procurement team to oversee production or sourcing of interior fit-out and furniture items, ensuring alignment with project budgets and aesthetic goals;
  • Liaising with carpenters, fabricators and contractors for execution and site supervision of works;
  • Assisting in documenting campus development activities related to interiors and contributing to the preparation of teaching and learning materials, including life – cycle analysis;
  • Organising workshops and consultations with key stakeholders;
  • Contributing to the modelling and setup of the Makers Centre to support hands-on training in carpentry and other interior works;
  • Providing support to other IIHS activities including academics, research, training, practice, operations, and others;
  • Participating in all activities of Institution-Building at IIHS; carrying out tasks as assigned by IIHS; and traveling on IIHS work within or outside the country as and when needed.

Structure and Reporting

The architect will be an External Consultant coordinating with the Lead, Campus development at IIHS and will be required to collaborate effectively with a diverse group of internal teams and external individuals/organizations, and students.

Person Specification

The ideal candidate should have:

  • A professional degree in Architecture and/ or a Master's in Architecture/ Interior design;
  • Around 8 years of prior experience, preferably in the interior design and execution for interiors for sustainable buildings;
  • Working experience in Revit and Rhino platforms in addition to AutoCAD, SketchUp, InDesign, and Photoshop;
  • Demonstrable knowledge of sustainable building practices and methods, embodied energy analysis and life – cycle analysis;
  • An understanding of building codes, environmental regulations, and green building rating systems;
  • The willingness to travel from time to time as per project requirements;
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills;
  • Flexibility and the ability to work well in a fast-paced environment;
  • Competence in handling simultaneously tasks and smaller projects;
  • Excellent organisational skills and ability to be a team player;

This is a contractual engagement for an initial term of 11 months, renewable on mutual consent. This offer is on an exclusive basis, which implies that other professional assignments (whether compensated or not) that bear a potential conflict of interest with IIHS cannot be undertaken.

Location

This position is based in Kengeri, Bengaluru and may entail travel to other locations in India.
