Role Description The Architect – 3D Printed Construction role is a full-time, on-site position based in Chennai. This role involves translating design concepts into buildable 3D printed structures, developing architectural layouts optimized for 3D printing, and coordinating with engineering and software teams to ensure seamless integration between design, materials, and printing systems. The architect will participate in concept development, schematic and detailed design, design reviews, and prototype iterations for pilot and commercial projects. Daily responsibilities include preparing drawings and 3D models, contributing to print-ready design guidelines, reviewing print trials, and incorporating feedback from R&D, production, and project teams. The role also includes collaborating on project timelines, supporting client presentations, and documenting best practices for 3D printed construction workflows.
Key Responsibilities
1. Design Support & Documentation
Assist in the end-to-end architectural design process for 3D-printed construction projects.
Prepare and maintain architectural drawings, plans, renderings, specifications, and design documentation.
Manage revisions and ensure proper version control throughout the project lifecycle.
Support the development of 3D models, visualizations, and presentation materials for design reviews and stakeholder discussions.
2. Technical Collaboration
Collaborate with engineers, designers, and multidisciplinary teams to integrate 3D printing technology into architectural designs.
Participate in design reviews, brainstorming sessions, and project development meetings.
Develop design solutions that effectively leverage the opportunities and constraints of concrete 3D printing.
Coordinate with materials and operations teams to incorporate printing parameters into architectural detailing.
3. Compliance & Standards
Ensure designs comply with local building codes, regulations, and industry standards.
Review design outputs for accuracy, constructability, and compliance.
Identify potential design issues proactively and support timely resolution.
4. Design Visualization & Communication
Prepare clear and accurate drawings, visualizations, models, and presentations.
Communicate design intent effectively through technical documentation and visual representations.
Support internal and external design presentations and project reviews.
5. Research & Continuous Learning
Stay updated on industry trends, advancements in 3D printing technology, and sustainable construction practices.
Develop expertise in parametric, computational, and digital fabrication design tools.
Contribute to internal knowledge-sharing initiatives and design research activities.
Qualifications & Requirements
Educational Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in Architecture (Mandatory)
Master's Degree in Architecture or a related discipline will be an added advantage
Experience
2–4 years of experience in architectural design and construction.
Exposure to innovative, parametric, or non-traditional construction methodologies is preferred.
Experience supporting projects involving digital fabrication or advanced construction technologies is advantageous.
Technical Skills
Proficiency in Rhino, Grasshopper, AutoCAD, Revit, and other 3D modelling software.
Basic to working knowledge of 3D printing technologies and their application in construction.
Familiarity with building codes, regulations, and industry standards.
Strong graphic communication skills, including technical drawings, renderings, and presentations.
Ability to prepare clear, structured, and accurate design documentation.
