About Origin
Origin (previously 10xConstruction) is building general-purpose autonomous robots for US construction to tackle rising costs, safety risks, and labour shortages. Our modular, multi-trade platform combines purpose-built hardware with real-time site intelligence to navigate complex environments and execute tasks with precision. Trained in high-fidelity simulation and already deployed on live sites, our robots deliver 5x faster execution, 250%+ margin expansion, and significant cost savings. Join India's most talent-dense robotics team consisting of individuals from IITs, Stanford, UCLA, etc.
About The Role
The Mechanical Engineer Apprentice - Enclosures and Harness role is for high-potential, early-career engineers who want to build real, rugged hardware. You won't just be doing paperwork; you will own specific sub-assemblies of our robot's body. Under the mentorship of Senior Engineers, you will design brackets, build custom cables, run the 3D printers, and conduct extreme physical tests on the hardware you built.
Key Responsibilities
Sub-Assembly Design:
- Take ownership of designing specific modules (e.g., a waterproof camera shroud, a mounting bracket for a motor controller, or a specific cable guide) in SolidWorks
- Assist in maintaining the CAD vault and managing Bills of Materials (BOMs) for the enclosure and harnessing teams
- Generate basic 2D drawings for rapid prototyping vendors
Fabrication & Harness Assembly:
- Heavily utilize the lab's 3D printers (FDM, SLA) to create form-and-fit prototypes of enclosures and sensor mounts
- Build custom wire harnesses by handlearning industrial crimping standards, applying heat shrink, and managing braided sleeving
- Assemble test rigs and mock-ups using 80/20 extrusions and basic hand tools
Testing & Validation Support:
- Assist in setting up and executing thermal chamber tests, drop tests, and vibration tests
- Collect and log data during physical testing (e.g., monitoring internal temperatures of enclosures under heavy compute loads)
Requirements
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
- 0-2 years of experience (a strong portfolio of physical engineering projectslike Solar Car, FSAE, or complex personal hardware buildsis strictly required)
- Solid foundation in 3D CAD (Onshape or equivalent)
- Strong grasp of basic thermodynamics and mechanics of materials
- Wrench-turning capability: you must be highly comfortable using hand tools, crimpers, and building physical objects
Preferred Experiences
- Experience operating 3D printers or building custom electronics boxes
- Familiarity with basic electrical wiring (stripping, soldering, crimping)
