Job Description

About Origin

Origin (previously 10xConstruction) is building general-purpose autonomous robots for US construction to tackle rising costs, safety risks, and labour shortages. Our modular, multi-trade platform combines purpose-built hardware with real-time site intelligence to navigate complex environments and execute tasks with precision. Trained in high-fidelity simulation and already deployed on live sites, our robots deliver 5x faster execution, 250%+ margin expansion, and significant cost savings. Join India's most talent-dense robotics team consisting of individuals from IITs, Stanford, UCLA, etc.

About The Role

The Mechanical Engineer Apprentice - Robotic Power Tools role is for high-potential, early-career engineers who want to build complex, moving hardware. You won't just be doing paperwork; you will own specific sub-assemblies of our robotic power tools. Under the mentorship of Senior Engineers, you will design parts, run the 3D printers, turn wrenches, and conduct physical tests on the mechanisms you designed.

Key Responsibilities

Sub-Assembly Design:

  • Take ownership of designing specific modules (e.g., a dust extraction nozzle, a bracket for a limit switch, or a protective cover for a tool motor) in SolidWorks
  • Assist in maintaining the CAD vault and managing Bills of Materials (BOMs) for the tooling team
  • Generate basic 2D drawings for rapid prototyping vendors

Fabrication & Assembly:

  • Heavily utilize the lab's 3D printers (FDM, SLA) to create form-and-fit prototypes of tool interfaces
  • Assemble electromechanical power tools, learning how to properly press-fit bearings, tension belts, and torque fasteners
  • Fabricate custom test jigs and mounting plates on the fly using basic shop tools

Testing & Validation Support:

  • Assist in setting up load tests and cycle tests for new tool mechanisms
  • Collect and log data during physical testing (e.g., measuring deflection, weighing tools, monitoring motor temperatures)

Requirements

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
  • 0-2 years of experience (a strong portfolio of physical engineering projectslike FSAE, Robocon, combat robots, or complex personal buildsis strictly required)
  • Solid foundation in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Strong grasp of classical mechanics and kinematics
  • Wrench-turning capability: you must be highly comfortable using hand and power tools to assemble hardware

Preferred Experiences

  • Experience operating 3D printers or basic CNC machines
  • Familiarity with basic GD&T concepts and reading engineering drawings

For apprentice/Intern :

This is a six-month contract-to-hire position, with potential for longer-term opportunities depending on your contributions and interests. We're excited to work with motivated individuals who are eager to support real-world robot development and grow alongside us.

Benefits

  • Gain experience in a dynamic startup environment at the forefront of robotics and AI innovation
  • Contribute to the development of technology that will revolutionize the construction industry
  • Work alongside a talented and passionate team committed to making a real-world impact
  • Learn from experienced professionals and gain valuable skills in robotics software engineering
  • Gain practical experience in a real-world engineering environment
  • Contribute to a project with the potential to make a significant impact on the construction industry
