Job Description

About the Role

CK-12 (www.ck12.org) is on the lookout for talented, creative, and dedicated people to join our mission to provide great education to students around the world. We are looking for candidates to join our office in Bangalore as a Subject Matter Expert (Chemistry) !

We have a strong education platform that has served over 265+ Million users, have got over 2.33+ Billion questions answered, and have more than 290 thousand customized Flexbooks. We have embarked on an exciting journey to build an AI-powered student tutor and Teacher Assistant to build the next generation of learning platforms.

We are hiring an Applied AI Learning Engineer to help design, build, test, and improve AI-powered experiences for education products. This role combines prompt engineering, LLM application development, workflow design, evaluation, and product thinking.

You will work on systems that use large language models to support learning, teaching, content generation, assessment, and user guidance. This includes building and refining prompt pipelines, integrating with LLM APIs, developing scripts and lightweight tooling, supporting multi-step and multi-agent workflows, and evaluating system performance in real use cases.

The ideal candidate is technically hands-on and comfortable moving between prototyping, quality analysis, and production-minded iteration. They should understand how LLM systems behave in practice, know how to debug and improve them, and be able to collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, and subject matter experts.

What You'll Do

  • Design, test, and improve LLM-powered workflows for student and teacher-facing experiences
  • Build scripts, tools, and prototypes that support prompt iteration, batch testing, evaluation, and content generation
  • Integrate with LLM APIs and supporting services to develop reliable AI workflows
  • Help design and refine multi-step reasoning systems, tool-using workflows, and multi-agent patterns where appropriate
  • Create and maintain prompts, system instructions, schemas, structured outputs, and guardrails
  • Develop test sets, evaluation rubrics, and review frameworks to measure output quality, accuracy, safety, and instructional effectiveness
  • Analyze model outputs to identify failure modes, regressions, and opportunities for improvement
  • Work closely with engineering teams to translate prototypes into scalable product workflows
  • Collaborate with content, curriculum, and product teams to ensure outputs are useful, clear, and aligned to educational goals
  • Document workflows, experiments, best practices, and implementation decisions clearly

What We're Looking For

  • 3+ years of experience in applied AI, prompt engineering, educational technology, software prototyping, conversation design, or a related field
  • Experience working with LLM APIs in a practical setting
  • Ability to write scripts and lightweight applications in Python, JavaScript, or similar languages
  • Experience building or testing prompt pipelines, structured generation systems, or other LLM-powered workflows
  • Familiarity with API-based development, JSON schemas, structured outputs, and debugging model behavior
  • Strong understanding of how to evaluate AI outputs for quality, reliability, and user usefulness
  • Strong written communication and documentation skills
  • Ability to work across technical and non-technical teams in a fast-moving environment

Strongly Preferred

  • Experience with multi-agent systems, orchestration frameworks, or tool-calling workflows
  • Experience building internal evaluation tools, annotation pipelines, or QA systems for LLM applications
  • Familiarity with retrieval-augmented generation, vector search, or context management patterns
  • Experience using notebooks, spreadsheets, dashboards, or lightweight analytics tools to analyze model behavior
  • Background in education, instructional design, curriculum, or learning science
  • Experience with science or math content, standards alignment, or teacher-facing workflows
  • Experience with multilingual workflows or localization
  • Familiarity with Git, experiment tracking, and iterative product development practices

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means shipping AI workflows that are more reliable, useful, and scalable over time. You will help improve the quality of LLM-powered features by combining technical experimentation with strong judgment. You should be comfortable building prototypes, identifying what is failing, improving prompts and system design, and helping the team move from ad hoc experimentation to repeatable, production-ready workflows.

This role is a strong fit for someone who likes building with LLMs, enjoys debugging ambiguous systems, and can balance technical implementation with product and user-quality thinking.
